The Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards
A quick chat with someone making an impact on the First Coast this week
The Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards appears at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Florida Theatre.
Edwards was recruited from the Contours and joined the Temptations in 1968, replacing founding member David Ruffin. Edwards' voice can be heard on Tempts classics such as Cloud Nine, Psychedelic Shack, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Ball of Confusion and I Can't Get Next To You.
He was with the band until 1977, then again from 1979-'83. He was one of six Temptations inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
Edwards group is not the same Temptations that was scheduled to perform last month in Jacksonville but canceled at the last minute. In 1999, Edwards and Temptations leaders Otis Williams settled a lawsuit allowing Williams to keep the Temptations name and Edwards to perform as The Temptations Revue.
Edwards took a few minutes recently to talk from his home in Missouri.
This show is a benefit for the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice's Thurgood Marshall Scholarships. Do you do a lot of those?
We do quite a few. We're really glad that somebody still wants to hear us, you know.
You joined the Temptations in 1968, midway through their hit-making years. Do you perform songs from earlier in the band's career?
We do all the old Temptations songs. We do everything fans want to hear.
There are two Temptations groups out on the road. Is there a friendly rivalry between them?
Yeah, there's a friendly rivalry there. They've got a great group, and we've got a great group. We give the people more to listen to. They do a lot of the more modern songs; we take you all the way through the Temptations history.
What do you think of R&B music today?
One thing about music: A hit record is a hit record. Take My Girl or Just My Imagination; those records stand up against any record.
