The Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards: Go on, Tempt us with this revue
Dennis Edwards joined group in late '60s

Just to be clear -- this is not the same Temptations group that was supposed to (but didn't) play Metropolitan Park in June.
That was the Temptations featuring Otis Williams, a founding member and longtime group leader. Tuesday brings us The Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards, a man who first came along several years after the original group formed in the early '60s, and who has been in and out of the group several times since.
For all but the most devoted of Tempts fans, this is probably just a matter of semantics. You can rest assured that Tuesday's show at the Florida Theatre will conjure up nostalgic memories of the Motown act that set the template for male vocal groups.
Edwards' post-'68 incarnation of the Tempts was known for such songs as I Can't Get Next to You, Papa Was a Rolling Stone and Psychedelic Shack. The group also sang Cloud Nine, a song that Gladys Knight and the Pips refused to record based on its alleged drug content, which Motown denied.
Before Edwards came aboard, the Temptations had already spent several years dominating the R&B world. My Girl, Since I Lost My Baby and Get Ready were all theirs, and the group also performed such standards as Old Man River.
Edwards, who initially joined the group as a replacement for David Ruffin, has had a stormy relationship with the Temptations. According to critic Ron Wynn, Edwards "left for the first time in 1977, returned in 1979 and left again in 1983." He did some solo work, then returned in 1987. In 1999, he was legally barred from using the Temptations name, which Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin co-owned.
