And another question.
It probably should be a separate thread, but I wrote about the the Classic Five, the intermediate Tempts, the present Tempts and the concept of the Tempts as an evolving Temptations. I'd like to know how others view the Temptations.

Well, there's one thing about Kelly Osbourne (and the song's pretty good actually,) but she has three little letters that are supporting her through all of this. MTV I mean, yeah, the song is good, but MTV was how the song got exposure to begin with and MTV's not gonna let that song do poorly. They've got too much invested in it. As for the radio stations, calling them, writing them, etc. I can tell you that we've (myself and other Tempts fans) already made that effort, and this was in the days following the movie. What came of it? Nothing. As for why Smokey called them the "Deacons" I think I remember him saying in that same explanation that they had "church harmony," so I guess that's where the name came from. I can't give you the whole etymology behind "Blow" (LOL! I like to know where words come from too!) but I'm pretty sure that Smokey was saying that they were AMAZINGLY talented singers.

I remember the comment Smokey made, but, interestingly, the Tempts themselves, even David, often commented on how much they owed to Gospel music and to singing in church. You remember the story about a hit song they were going to give to the Temptations but couldn't find them so gave it to another group which then had a hit. Where were the Tempts? They were all in church listening to Gospel music.
I got to thinking more about "blow" and thought of "blowhard" which has been present for a long while, maybe centuries. Blow does mean to send out from the mouth, to expel air so maybe it has been around a long while in referring to singers. And blow has so many meanings and so many slang meanings, it isn't surprising that it would be used for singers.

janebse, I must admit, over the years The Temptations had their ups and downs just like any body. From the early Tempts to the present, they have tried to maintain the highest qualities of showmanship. The Tempts of today has to go right up there with the best of them. Their harmony, dancing, and the way they look as a group are much greater than even I thought it would be. The tradition is still alive.

The best in the world, and you'd better believe it!
I was watching the "Stay" video the other night. I love the song but hated the video---so sleazy and meaningless. The song is a warm love song, the video a sleazy one-night stand or whatever.
Anyway, I was tempted to write to Motown. (Ah, tempted tempting Temptations) and say that a video of the Tempts should suggest "We are the best in the world, and you'd better believe it." There should be an aura of quality, style, excellence. When you're the best you don't stoop to sleaze.
A little bit like watching Secretariat walk to a starting gate of a race track. The power in those muscles.... the hidden speed....
The Temptations don't have to inpress you. They are IMPRESSIVE. They are the noun and don't need to try to be a verb.

Yeah, I was never too crazy about the "Stay" video either.

I thought they had some really good videos...besides "Stay", which I agree left alot to be desired. I really liked time travel plot of "Time After Time". It had a nice story. I also liked the compilation of video clips in "Some Enchanted Evening". "How Could He Hurt You" had a good plot to it and the Tempts look great...performing and acting. I think they could have done a similar thing with "Four Days" and promoted the new album much better. "I'm Here" was not a favorite of mine...I didn't like the setting under the streetlights. I thought it was dark and damp looking.

Huh? There was a video for "Time after Time" or you mean it would have MADE a good video?

most videos don't follow the songs -they are so provocative and often tasteless and pointless. i hope the tempts don't look too beneath themselves on videos. i prefer them classed up on stage with their nice shiny selves!

O.K. Let's dream up a classy video. I thought on the Ed Sullivan Show (which was never known for clever settings) they had a good one for "Runaway Child." A subtle interpretation, and I loved the white and black outfits.
Hey, when I watch a golf tournament, I am grading all the golfers on their outfits.
If we could come up with some ideas for videos, I will send our suggestions to Motown and Star Direction. After all, what do we have to lose?
Should we just pick one song or should everyone come up with an idea for a favorite song of theirs?
