The Temptations Have Issues! part 1
There are multiple groups of Temptations now.
I don't really think that any of them are impostors.
All of these men were at one time members of the
Temptations, none of them are impostors. - (Bob)
Wouldn't it be nice if Otis were to gather all of these
folks up and put them on stage together and do a tour???
(just a thought)(Bob)
NO!

Bob, this is where I tend to agree with MMDells. First of all I think that
it would be counterproductive. The Temptations as I know them have had their
"Reunion Tour" it was held in late 82 and 83. The members were David Ruffin,
Dennis Edwards, Eddie Kendricks, Richard Street, Otis Williams, & Melvin
Franklin. There can never be another one. Whats done is done. With the
exception of Otis and Dennis the original Temptations are dead. I happen to
love the original Temptations as well as the main group that Dennis fronted
with Paul, Melvin, Eddie & Otis. Glen Carl Leonard has always been held in
high regard as was Damon Harris as a successor to Eddie Kendricks. Ali
Woodson has been held in similar regard for carrying on in true Temptation
tradition in lieu of Dennis Edwards and Barrington Henderson had a couple of
hits as Ali's replacement. Theo Peoples is now a Four Top and like Richard
Street before him never got the props that he deserved. This brings me to
this point, the current Temptations, Otis, GC, Terry, Joe and Ron would be
viewed as the authorized Temptations for reasons all too familiar with
everyone who knows the business.
I have the distinct feeling that for whatever reason (s) these guys do not
like each other. I don't believe that Jesus himself could ever put them back
together and I can live with that. Let me give you an example: A couple of
weeks ago both Dennis Edwards and the Temptation Review and Otis Williams
group of Temptations were in the Chicago area on the same date and same show
time but approximately 30 miles from each other. I elected to go to the
Dennis Edwards Show and I was amazed at how good Dennis and his group have
progressed as far as sound and stage presentation; they are the closet thing
to the Temptations of the Psychedelic era. They played to a full house and
were very entertaining. Otis' group who have more of the Classic Tempt
flavor and rely on that catalog of songs are very good too, but they are
better suited to their new material and the classic catalog, GC Cameron is a
vet and he fits that slick Tempt image well. But therein lies the problem,
as a consumer I had to make a choice and it was not for the authorized
version.
I wish all of them well, but this is a problem that I cannot solve. The
Temptations have become so fragmented and psychotic it's not even a
worthwhile story anymore. I can't fault any of them for wanting to make a
living, but has there ever been such a popular group that was this
dysfunctional? The Temptations were at one time the most popular black vocal
ensemble in the world. That was then; they will never reach that plateau
again. If only they could have imitated the Dells or The Four Tops, we
wouldn't have to discuss these salient issues.
Yes Bob you're right, most of these guys could lay a valid claim as former
lead singers of the Temptations and in that they are not imposters and
that's all right with me, but they can't lay claim to being The
Temptations....that's a whole other story. The way I see it, In the
beginning there was El, Paul, Otis, Eddie, Melvin, then David and Dennis.
That's a wrap!!!!!!!! Bob I was ready to post about watching the videotape
of TCB over the holidays and this little post popped up, I was all set to
tell you guys how I felt such pains of nostalgia as well as the tremendous
amount of black pride that I felt as I was watching the Tempts and
Supremes......and Paul Williams singing For Once In My Life and
Respect.......they were never the same after Paul died....never.
PS: heres another thought, maybe they sang so well because they were so
pissed off with each other that it worked like a group dynamic .......ah
hell no.........looks like the Tempts are giving me issues.......I guess
that we're blessed to have some type of "Temptations Forever".......
