Since I Lost My Baby is among the greatest songs ever produced at Motown. It could well be Smokey Robinson's greatest production. And it is the song that separates the Tempts from the other groups at Motown. (Unless you are a big Supremes fan, but that is another thread! ) Why? Well... The music Smokey and Pete Moore build the music to match the desparation in David's voice. They start off, as usual in many Motown songs, with the rhythm section(probably White/Jamerson/Benjamin and Van Dyke) setting the groove. Now the strings and horns appear heavy at the beginning, fade out, then rise again as the verse goes towards the hook. And it increases through each verse because the tension is always building. It's like the Miracles are setting up a wall of sound, to (a) maintain a basis for the harmonies and (b) reflect the ever-changing feeling in the song. Of course, there is also the famous 15(or so) hits, which shows that the Funk Brothers are locked, in step. The songListening to a Smokey/Miracles composition is like being in an English class. Compare and contrast, metaphors and similies. First verse: Despite the promise of a new day which always has hope, David doesn't have hope, because he's lost his baby. His new day seems old. The sun, with brightness and light is cold. Using the world at large to contrast with David's world, the two states at opposite ends. Second verse: Again , sets up the joys of life. Birds singing, kids playing, plenty of work(?) and pay(??). But Ruffin can't enjoy it because he's lost his baby. All that fun around him and it is a bore. All that money around, but he's poor. Smokey and Pete are getting deep. Take it to the bridge: It is not so much using her to make each line rhyme, it's the word before it. Kind, find, remind, behind, Tryin', inclined. Is that impressive? Or simply brilliant? Desperation sets in... Last verse: Bleak as can be, cause there's no way to find David's baby. Uses the last line to set up the major theme of the song; since he's lost his baby, good things are bad, happiness is sadness. Like you can't enjoy yourself in a middle of a party(life), because what's happened to you(Your life). The harmoniesYou know what is amazing about this song, you can hear the Tempts together and separately. Usually Smokey pits Eddie and Melvin in the same frame for comparison. But he locks Melvin with David, to give it feeling. The Five Deacons sing the call and response beautifully. Just like they were in church. David makes a statement and the Tempts back it up. David laments so stridently, yet he builds the sorrow throughout the song. At the end, the desperation overtakes everything. The Tempts harmonies build the same way. At the end you have a hopeless, frantic man, which is what the Miracles intended. Just a few thoughts on this song, since I obviously have too much time on my hands!!!

Right on SS.........That was awesome. Being a Smokey Robinson the writer fan, I was always intrigued with the way he wrote . There were no other writers who got as deep as he did in such a simple song. He could mix some ingrediants in a tune that were certain to make you think and swoon at the same time. Oh I have allready said no on else could write a tune with a title like:WHEN THE WORDS FROM YOUR HEART GET CAUGHT UP IN YOUR THROAT. Ooooooooooo weeeeeeee I'd better write a note!!!!!

"Give Her All the Love That I Got." Most anything that Paul is singing lead on is underrated. --Peach
