The magic that was the C5 and the HOF6 Temptations was a once in a life time experience that thank God we can see from time to time through video. The real magic was in being there for the live performances. Thank God that there are various incarnations of the Tempts with very talented members to carry on that magic for those who were not blessed to have seen the C5, or HOF6 perform. Whether they be Otis', Dennis', Richards, Glenn's or Ali's groups they all have that magic that brings joy to Temptations fans worldwide. I think that magic will continue for decades to come. People around here who know me know I tell this all the time............there was nothing..................i mean nothing.................like seeing the C-5 in person. That iw when I knew there was a black man who didn't shuffle, or tap dance, always look down at the ground instead of eye to eye. They showed style, class and from the sounds of the women in the audience a sexiness never before attributes to a black man in public. I mean , there was Sidney Potier and that's it. In those days they didn't even have to announce them. They just put the 4 headed mike in front of the curtain and all hell broke loose. I loved watching them because if you got caught up in the lead singer you would miss some spectacular move by the background and if you were daydreaming on them, Eddie or David and Paul would sing a note that would make you jump out of your seat. As I said before they weren't screaming for any one member, they were screaming for the Temptations!!!!!!!!!! Paul did mosyt of the talking at first but the loudest noise was when Melvin opened his mouth. They were simply the best!!!!!!!!!!

Hey DSF! Do you have Ali's first television appearance with the group in your collection? I don't remember the show but i remember the appearance because the group did "Ain't to proud to beg" with Richard singing lead! Why it stands out in my mind is because he joined so quick and it happened before word got out Dennis was replaced and i was like "Where's Dennis?" and then i looked and saw this skinny guy dancing and said to myself "Who's That?" I thought that Woodson's first tv appearance was at the N.B.A. All Star Game.

You are so right Aba my man that kind of CLASS and SHOWMANSHIP is no where evident in todays quote/unquote singing groups. Going to a concert was an experience that stayed with you weeks, hell months after the show was over. That is sad to say not the case in todays world. Todays young people are missing out on what the concert experience was all about. The staging, the lighting, the orchestra( real horns), the choreography and real singing were the vocalist took, his or her time to sing a song with feeling. Soft and sweet and then building as they reached the climax as if taking you on a musical rollercoaster ride that left you exhausted when it was all over. The only way to get that experience is to go check out the masters like the Review, Otis' Tempts, The O'jays, Whispers and others who are of that generation and that discipline. I know it's still there just by reading the enthusiastic concert reviews of the members of this board. I.... I gonna shut up now. I kind of got excited ..... Sorry.

Okay I know I said I was gonna shut up but please let me say this one more teenie weenie thing ( I'm talking about The Tempts/My Boy's). My first concert ever I 'm not clear on the year but it was Dennis, Otis, Paul, Eddie and Melvin. They were on the bill with Edwin Starr, Yvonne Fair( not sure if thats the correct spelling of her last name) and a young group called the Posse. It was at the Mid South Coliseum in Memphis and to show how mesmerized I was, to this day have no idea whatsoever who I went to the show with or how I got there but I was there and I didn't dream it. I remember that four post mike stand and Tempts coming out dressed in grey hounds tooth Sherlock Holmes style suits with the capes and the Sherlock Holmes hats. The inner lining of the capes was pink and there was pink somewhere else on the suits but I'm not exactly sure where it was( this around 1969 or70 ). It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen or heard in my life. I had to catch the bus to go home that night (guess that must be how I got there) and as I left I snatched a poster off of a telephone pole, took it home and nail it on my bedroom wall where it stayed for years until I had moved out and my Mom decided that my bedroom would make a great sewing room. So when I hear how excited people get after seeing the Tempts or the Review and how hard it is to come down from the experience I can relate, and I ain't come down yet from that first time or the time in 1972 or 73 when they came back to the Coliseum with Damon, or meeting Eddie at my high school in 1971 and hanging out with him back stage for two nights watching him perform ( he was so nice to this incredibly goofy starstruck kid) at the Club Paradise. Years later when my band became the house band there I would sit back stage and relive the whole thing over and over. I'm still high from seeing them on june 20th 1981 when they came back with Glenn. I remember that date because I worked at the local newspaper and the music critic and I were real tight and I got a couple of pictures taken that night of them performing. I saw them again around 85 or 86 with Ali at the Orpheum Theater for the Black Gold Awards along with The Four Tops, New Edition, Lou Rawls, Freddie Jackson and Melba Moore. The Tempts did Do You Really Love Your Baby and Touch Me. I thought Ali was gonna that note he holds on Touch Me forever. But that night too was magical for me not just because the Tempts were there but the Good Lord blessed me to experience hearing Levi Stubbs sing I Believe in You and Me. The last time I saw My Boys live was in 1987 twice that year with Dennis. at the Mid South Fair in September and Downtown at the Cook Convention Center with the O'jays. After that my job began to take up all of my time as I switched working and programming various musical formats from rock, country, gospel,R&B and the blues at radio stations all over the mid south. I had found something else I loved as much as singing on stage myself. I loved radio and threw myself into it doing 12 and 13 hour days six and sometimes seven days a week. My wife wasn't to happy about that. My last Tempts experience was in 1988 when I did a telephone interview with Otis about his book, I ain't come down yet. Okay.... I'm gonna shut up now. Sorry

TFFL...DAG, your reviews and memories belong right up there with (((Edy's))) and (((GD's))) on those pages Mike posted for the news articles!! Did you by any chance happen to catch Dennis and the Review last February at the Peabody? (2003). We had planned to try to get to that but ended up blizzarded in in NYC instead . p.s. Pollstar tells me they (the Review) are scheduled to be at the Peabody again in February 2005...the 12th. Mark your calendar!

Thanks Kalisa ! I missed seeing them I was recovering from surgery during that time. I live downtown and I'm about three streets north of the Peabody. I'm on my way there and I'm gonna park my butt right there in front of that hotel until they come. Seriously though thank you for the heads up and if the crops don't die and the creek don't flood I'll be there with bells on. I've got their Live At San Pablo cd and a lot times its plug into my cd drive along with a few other tempts cd's while I'm this board. I stick my headphones on and just blast away hear in Temptation Fan Nirvana. I was how ever able to tape their appearance along with the O'jays and Isaac Hayes on Willie Gary's Gift of Christmas Celebration on the MBC cable network when it aired in december. The Review did Papa was a Rolling Stone and a medley of My Girl and just My Imagination. The show went off with them singing Silent Night. As my best friend sometimes says " them boys can BLOW!!!"

TFFL..A dear friend of mine is the comptroller for the Peabody Org, so if I can talk Kalisa into dumping her hubby for Valentines Day AGAIN we’ll be attending that show. You won’t have to park your butt outside the hotel, we can all hang out on the roof with the ducks ;D LOL..unless we do the annual BB king show which is usually around the same date, and get snowbound in New York. Video of David…Did I read those words I'll be happy to either buy a copy from you, or trade for some video and/or music you may not have in your collection.

TFFL....Calendars are marked and plans definitely afoot, seeing as V-Day falls on Monday so I wouldn't get in hot water with Mr.K2 (except the hot water in the jacuzzi ;D ) I'm gonna be there dressed in nothing but a diaper, carrying a bow and arrow with angels wings on my back in celebration of V-Day. Oh by the way just in case anyone cares I found out today how I went to my first Tempts concert that I described earlier. Back in the 1950's and 1960's radio station WDIA here in Memphis had a series of concerts twice a year to raise money for different charities. In the summer it was The Goodwill Revue and in the Winter it was called The Starlight Revue. The show I went to was one of the final revue's as they became to expensive to produce because of the number of acts that appeared on the bill. I went with an older cousin who remembered the concert as if it were yesterday. Also in my excitement in reviewing the Temptations concerts I attended I somehow overlooked the Reunion concert at the Mud Island Amphi Theater on August 9th, 1982 with the Mississippi River and the lights of city behind them on stage. Now I'm sure you all will be happy to see these words, I have nothing else to say.
