So if I'm reading this correctly, the single is in the top 40 and the cd is still on the chart. Rumors of its demise seem to heve been exaggerated, I think. ;D ;D ;D

Considering they are much older than most of the the folks in the same area of the charts, I think it's doing good. The fans will have to make a run on the radio stations to get it more air play. Remember, the money folk think the only one listening to them are over 40. Don't wait, pick up that phone now. Call your local station and demand more Tempts. All together now "((((((((((More Tempts, more Tempts))))))))))))"...

Rumors of its demise seem to heve been exaggerated, I think. ;D ;D ;D Let's remember, though, that neither single nor album is on the charts. They are both on the single is registering on the Urban Adult Contemporary charts, not the Urban Contemporary charts or Hot 100. Also, the album is only on the R&B charts, not on the Billboard 200 charts. As of now, "Legacy" has not been in the top 50 albums. I don't mean to be a "stick in the mud" but these numbers don't really translate into sales. I know, I know... LOL!! Ed Edited to clarify the whole "charts" thing.

To put this into perspective, Prince's Musicology sold 24,000 units and its #17 on the R&B chart. I don't have the soundscan numbers but it can't really be selling very well if it debuted at #18 and is already down to #52.

I also read in "Rolling Stone" that Prince is giving away one copy to each person who buys a concert ticket and those freebies are calculated into his total sales. So his numbers are really inflated... Ed

I'm not even sure I know what urban-contemporary means. People love to give labels to things and I am not sure these are for good reasons.
I listened to the conductor of the Boston Pops tonight, and he talked about traditions in music which are good but which must also go forward to speak to the next generation. He was trained in classicism, worked as an accompanist for an Elvis impersonator, played in a jazz band, performed in musicals, and, of course, conducts a symphonic orchestra. But he is open to all kinds of music and loves it all.
LEGACY is an example of the Temptations continuing to go forward, keeping to their tradition of harmonies with the group being more important and yet welcoming new trends in music. The Temptations are not only great, but they accomplish much and are unusual in their willingness to embrace the future. I've been having a great deal of repair work in my home lately, and all the repairmen have loved LEGACY after hearing it in my home, telling me they were going to buy a copy on their way home. I certainly have not tipped them. And they didn't get any extra business from me.
Maybe the sales are simply coming from people who hear LEGACY and say, "This is good."
After listening to DAVID, I understand why it was not released in 1971. David's voice is fine, but the songs are simply not anything special. "A Rainy Night in Georgia" has always been a good song. The Jackson 5 made "I Want You Back" memorable. Whether the producers did not know how to use David, or the songs were not the right ones, I am not sure. I do believe the backup singers added nothing to the album. And after hearing them, I appreciated the Temptations' harmonic talents much, much more. What the Temptations added to every song is unbelievable. And what they are still adding is equally unbelievable.
I know why they only made 3500 copies. LEGACY grows on the listener; DAVID does not.
Whether LEGACY goes platinum or not, I think it will last and people will grow to love it. A #1 hit does not necessarily mean a great song that lasts. A best-seller rarely means a great book. The titles of greatness are only given by acceptance over the years.

I have to disagree with you here Jane (and this is truly a rare thing... . "Legacy" is just the kind of album that makes it's impact quickly but is just as disposable as any album made by any atypical R&B group today. It made it's impact on me quickly and has faded from my CD player already for the most part. It goes in every once in a while but, for the most part, I'm done with it for the time being. I don't think any of the songs on the album are strong enough to last any real length of time. They're good enough to be enjoyed, to be sure, but I don't think they've created anything especially lasting with this collection of songs. "David", on the other hand, is brilliant. I don't understand why that one wasn't released and this one has grown all the more on me as I've listened to it. "David", on the other hand, has taken up residence in my CD player. Ed
