UMe Offers Motown's First 45 Singles Plus 45 Hard-to-Find Motown Albums on Apple's iTunes to Celebrate Motown's 45th Anniversary
SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Premiering on the Apple iTunes
Music Store is an exclusive "store within a store" marking the 45th
anniversary of Motown Records. Keeping with the numerical theme, Motown is
making available to iTunes customers the first 45 singles ever issued by
Motown (thus 45 Motown 45s), a collection never before compiled and presented
as such in any format, and 45 hard-to-find albums from the Motown archive.
Many of the singles and albums have been long out-of-print in any format and
never issued on CD. The vast majority of them will be available for digital
download for the first time.
The promotion comes on the heels of the release of MOTOWN #1s (April 20),
which has already hit #1 on iTunes. The campaign, which runs through
May 25th, precedes the forthcoming launch of MotownSelect.com and the May 17th
airing of the "Motown 45" TV special on ABC.
The first 45 Motown 45s range from April 1959's "Let's Rock" from Barrett
Strong to August 1961's "I Am Bound" from The Golden Harmoneers. Included are
the label's first Top 10 hits -- Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)" (#2
R&B/#23 pop), The Miracles' "Shop Around" (Pop #2/R&B #1), and Mary Wells'
"Bye Bye Baby" (Pop #45/R&B #8) and "I Don't Want To Take A Chance" (Pop
#33/R&B #9).
Also heard are the debut Motown singles from such legendary artists as The
Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and Jimmy Ruffin. Among the more
obscure performers are The Swinging Tigers, Nick & The Jaguars, Popcorn & The
Mohawks, Singin' Sammy Ward, The Satintones, Eugene Remus, and Gino Parks.
The 45 classic Motown albums span 1961-1971. Included are four from The
Four Tops (SECOND ALBUM, REACH OUT, STILL WATER RUNS DEEP and GREATEST HITS),
a pair from a solo Marvin Gaye (MOODS OF MARVIN GAYE and IN THE GROOVE aka I
HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE) plus his TAKE TWO duet LP with Kim Weston, six
from The Supremes/Diana Ross & The Supremes (WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO, MORE HITS
BY THE SUPREMES, SING HOLLAND/DOZIER/HOLLAND, I HEAR A SYMPHONY, LOVE CHILD
and RIGHT ON), four from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (I'LL TRY SOMETHING
NEW, GREATEST HITS FROM THE BEGINNING, MAKE IT HAPPEN aka TEARS OF A CLOWN and
SPECIAL OCCASION) and three from Stevie Wonder (UPTIGHT, EIVETS REDNOW and
WHERE I'M COMING FROM).
The other artists headlining the available albums are Eddie Holland,
Brenda Holloway, the Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight and The Pips, Martha and
The Vandellas, the Marvelettes, The Originals, Jimmy Ruffin, David Ruffin, The
Spinners, Edwin Starr, The Temptations, The Undisputed Truth, Jr. Walker & The
All Stars, and Mary Wells. Also presented are seven extremely rare hits
compilations (MOTOWN SPECIAL #1, TAMLA SPECIAL #1 and five volumes of the
series COLLECTION OF 16 BIG HITS).
