Songwriters Hall of Fame names inducteees
NEW YORK, -- The National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters
Hall of Fame announced in New York Wednesday the next seven
inductees. Charles Fox, Al Green, Don McLean and two writing
teams -- Daryl Hall and John Oates, and Barrett Strong and
Norman Whitfield -- will be inducted in June ceremonies in New
York on June 10. Fox collaborated with lyricist Norman Gimbel
on the themes from TV comedies including "Happy Days" and
"Laverne & Shirley." He also wrote the Roberta Flack hit "Kill-
ing Me Softly with His Song," and the Oscar-nominated "Ready
to Take a Chance Again." Green's string of hits included "Let's
Stay Together" and "Tired of Being Alone." McLean wrote the
classic "American Pie" and the poetic "Vincent." Hall and Oates
had six No. 1 singles, including "Kiss on My List" and "Sara
Smile." Strong and Whitfield collaborated on a string of hits
at Motown that included "I Heard It Through the Grapevine,"
"Papa Was a Rolling Stone" and "I Can't Get Next to You."
