Canadian Idol host Ben Mulroney has come up with the perfect nickname for Ryan Malcolm. Last night on live TV, Mulroney announced that Malcolm is the “The King of Kingston.”
And after Malcolm’s smooth performance last night, he has a darn good chance of not just being the King of Kingston but also being crowned the king of Canadian Idol.
With an audience of 1,300 fans at Toronto’s John Bassett Theatre and millions of more viewers watching from home, the eight remaining contestants sang their favourite Motown hits.
There was some extra pressure last night with the supergroup The Temptations taking front-row seats after a guest appearance. Malcolm had even more pressure than most – he sang a song the famous quintet once covered.
Malcolm, 23, crooned Stevie Wonder’s hit song, For Once In My Life.
While this reporter would love tell you how Malcolm sounded up close and personal, it’s next to impossible.
The second Malcolm grooved his way onto the stage in his sleek leather jacket and black-rimmed frames, the shrieks of “We love you Ryan!” drowned out the sold-out theatre.
After last week’s Monday night’s show, The Whig-Standard said Malcolm nailed his falsetto notes during his rendition of Blue Rodeo’s ballad, Try. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this week, despite the screaming fans, no one could miss Malcolm’s pitch-perfect high notes.
Up until this week, there was little doubt that Mikey Bustos was every little girl’s dreamboat, but it’s safe to say that Malcolm is moving in on his territory. Girls are falling for his style.
Lori Flicker brought her daughters, Miranda, 11, Jenelle, 12, Charline, 20 and Abby Kelly, 23, to the show. All were cheering for Malcolm and waving a sign that read: “You Rock Ryan.”
Another popular slogan was: “We’re Not Lyin’ We’re Voting For Ryan.”
Lori Flicker said the Brantford family fell for Kingston’s crooner the first time he was on Idol and sang U2’s song One, even though it’s considered his weakest performance to date.
“We love Ryan,” Charline said.
“I think he’s really sexy because he’s not mainstream,” Abby Kelly said.
After declaring that Malcolm will make the top three, the family bolted for the stage to get his autograph.
There was a bit of a lineup.
After the hour-long show, fans swarmed the stage to get their Idol’s signatures.
As Malcolm signed photos and posed for photographs, his father John was taking photos and smiling at his son.
“It was a strong performance. It showed his soulful side,” said John , wearing an ‘I Voted For Ryan’ T-shirt that have become a hot commodity at the family’s Amherstivew restaurant, Nostalgia Station.
“He’s got some soul in there and he showed that he’s an entertainer.”
If Malcolm loses the competition, he may get a gig as a lean, mean dancing machine.
From the second he strutted on stage, Malcolm was groovin’ – hard. He ended his performance with an attitude-packed twirl – or “funky pirouette” as his stepmother, Deb called it.
“I loved the pirouette. I thought it totally made the performance,” she said.
Judge and singer Sass Jordan also noted Malcolm’s twirl: “You have the perfect pirouette. I loved it,” she said.
Judge and concert promoter Farley Flex told Malcolm he had it going on: “You’ve definitely got soul,” he said.
Artist manager and judge Zack Werner said while he started off a little rocky he liked it in the end: “That was all right,” he said.
And Jake Gold, a judge and Gord Downie’s solo manager, gave Malcolm the biggest compliment: “One thing you do, is you take these songs and perform them like you really care.”
Last Tuesday, the first three finalists were kicked off the summer’s No. 1 show after 1.6 million votes were cast. CTV is expecting that number to increase each week as the show picks up more and more momentum.
Superstar Mariah Carey makes a guest appearance on the results show that airs live tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Two competitors will get the axe tonight. If Malcolm makes the cut, he’ll perform Monday on the Canadian Idol Summer Hits show.
