The Temptations Join Céline Dion as CTV Announces Canadian Idol "Top 11" Theme Shows

TORONTO, Aug. 1 /CNW/ - Canadian Idol moves to a whole new stage,
literally, this Monday, Aug. 4 with the first of seven, live, themed
performance episodes from Toronto's John Bassett Theatre and featuring some of
the biggest names in the music industry. International superstar Céline Dion
and Motown legends The Temptations are just two of the acts booked to share
the stage with Canadian Idol competitors in the themed episodes, the first of
which is "Canadian Hits." The 90-minute special episode, the first to be
broadcast live from Toronto in front of a sold-out studio audience of over
1,000, begins at a new one-time only timeslot of 7:30 p.m. ET (tape delayed in
BC, AB and SK; check local listings) on CTV.

CTV takes an in-depth look at Canadian Idol's "Top 11" in an additional
half-hour special on Monday, Aug. 4. Canadian Idol Preview, which documents
the journey taken by the final 11 competitors from their first audition to the
moment they were announced as a finalist, airs at 7 p.m. ET (check local
listings) on CTV.

From Motown to the beach, the last seven episodes of Canadian Idol will
showcase a different theme each week. And in many of the episodes, special
guests who represent the theme will appear. Below is a tentative outline of
some of the theme shows:

- August 4 / "Canadian Hits": Canadian Idol's Top 11 perform an
all-Canadian show with a salute to some of this country's most
celebrated and successful musicians.

- August 11 / "Motown": Special guests The Temptations get things
grooving with a Motown medley of greatest hits while Canadian Idol
competitors show their soul.

- August 18 / "Summertime Hits": The most-watched show of the summer
gives tribute to the most-listened-to summertime classics with
Canadian Idol's six remaining competitors.

- August 25 / TBA

- September 1 / "Love Songs": Canadian Idol's Top 4 head to Vegas for a
lesson in love from chanteuse Céline Dion. Back in Toronto, they put
their knowledge to the test on stage in competition.

- September 8 / "My Own Idol": The Top 3 performs songs made famous by
their own, personal idols.

- September 15 / The first half of Canadian Idol's two-part grand
finale, tonight's the night Canadians choose the first-ever
Canadian Idol.

Canadian Idol is the number one program in Canada this summer in all
demos. The Monday night performance episode is consistently the most-watched
show of the week and Tuesday's results show also ranks in the Top 10. This
Tuesday's results show attracted 1.24 million viewers (2+).(*)

The Temptations have had Canadian Idol TV Show on that date on their tour schedule for some time now. However, I wasn't sure what sort of format was going to be used. It sounds entertaining, and, of course, I'm glad the Temptations will be there.

On July 30th the Rolling Stones appeared in Toronto. All are a part of getting people to return to Toronto and Canada after that flu epidemic. The Rolling Stones traditionally get ready for a tour in Toronto so this time they agreed to put on a concert there to help Toronto.

There was a fifteen act concert headlined by the Rolling Stones with AC/DC and the Isley Brothers performed in Downsview park in North Toronto for a crowd of just over four hundred thousand people.

Apparently Canada is calling in rainchecks on some of their fabled entertainers such as Celine Dion to help out. And Detroiters have always felt a sort of affinity for Canada, being just across the river.

Curiously one person who saw the concert felt AC/DC outdid everyone, even the Rolling Stones. And they said they had never even been particularly fond of AC/DC.

I also read a recent note where the Isley Brothers bombed in Las Vegas a few years ago. Another curious note because with his role as Mr. Biggs and doing concerts with R. Kelly, Ron Isley has picked up his career. An intelligent thing to do, reinvent yourself. Isley remarked that music keeps changing. He changes with it.

Justin Timberlake was there, obviously out of his usual element, and the crowd let him know it. They chucked water bottles at the man's head and I heard he caught one in the chest.

I might think about it, but I would never throw anything at any act no matter how much I disliked them, and especially not if they were there for a good cause.

Your comment "obviously out of his usual element" reminds me of an appearance by Ali Woodson recently.

There were lots of acts from the '60's appearing and the theme was Motown, plus Ali. The reviewer said that Ali was fine but "out of place since he was with the Temptations in the '80's and 90's." They didn't say whether it was what he sang or how he sang.

Is the Canadian Idol TV show going to be available on American TV?

If they are trying to reach the American public for tourism purposes, they need to reach us via TV. Not everyone has a satellite dish.

Their program sounds excellent, well thought out and purposeful.

I don't know Jane. I am one of the few that has a sattellite dish...one of those BIG Ugly ones. (We have the petite digital one too, but I like still having the big one--as a backup). I'm not sure if the signals from Canadian TV is scrambled or requires a subscription-it didn't use to. I'll have to see if I can bring in the signal.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say I doubt it was HOW he sang. Not possible.

I'm not sure if the signals from Canadian TV is scrambled or requires a subscription-it didn't use to.
