The Four Tops and The Temptations roll the musical dice Thursday to open The Skagit Valley Casino Resort's 2,700-seat outdoor events center in Bow.
Ray Charles, Paul Anka, Clint Black, Kenny Rogers, Wynonna and Heart are also on the summer bill.
"Entertainment and casino crowds go hand in hand. We've seen the success we've enjoyed over the course of two years with our Pacific Showroom, which seats 450. When we book acts like Vicki Lawrence, we do two shows and they sell out quickly," said Don Guglielmino, general manager.
Going outside was the next logical step.
The events center has a 92-foot shell and a July through September season, at which point acts will return to the indoor showroom, he said.
Half of the summer schedule's tickets have already been sold, Guglielmino said, and there's already a year-round facility under consideration.
The series includes reserved and general admission grandstand seating and a VIP area with a series pass. All concert and casino guests must be at least 21 years old.
The Skagit should score big with the Temptations-Four Tops combination, a pair of musical icons from the '60s that continues to roll out the Motown sound.
The Temptations' timeless hits include "The Way You Do the Things You Do," "My Girl," "I Know (I'm Losing You)," "You're My Everything," "Cloud Nine," "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," "I Can't Get Next to You," "Runaway Child, Running Wild," and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone."
The quintet won Grammys in the 1970s, a 2000 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for the album "Ear-Resistible," and a 2003 nomination in the same category for "Lady."
Although the faces have changed over the decades (Otis Williams continues to be the most familiar face), the group still goes to the bank on the sound, the five-man presentation and a pop/R&B song list that will have the audience singing along.
The original Four Tops stayed together until Lawrence Payton died in 1997, ending a 44-year string of harmonies. Now the originals and a former Temptation (Theo Peoples) keep the music rolling for a group inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
Their hits include "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'," "Ask the Lonely," "I Can't Help Myself," "It's the Same Old Song," "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "Bernadette," "Keeper of the Castle," "Ain't No Woman Like the One I've Got," and "When She Was My Girl."
The hotel is sold out for all concert dates: July 18, Paul Anka; July 20, Clint Black; Aug. 10, Heart; Aug. 15, Ray Charles; Sept. 7, Kenny Rogers; Sept. 26, Wynonna.
