'Get Ready' for the Temptations
June 20-22
After more than 40 years in the business, the legacy of the Temptations lives on. The smooth harmonies of the group will be on display at the Tropicana for performances Friday, June 20 at 9pm; Saturday, June 21 at 8pm and Sunday, June 22 at 7pm. Tickets are $55, $50, $40, $35, $30 and $25, available in person at the Tropicana box office or by phone from Ticketmaster, 1-800-736-1420.
In an interview with AC Weekly's Steve Angelucci, last remaining founding member Otis Williams talks about the origins of the group, which was a combination of two groups, the Distants with Williams, Al Bryant and Melvin Franklin, and the Primes with Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. "We were also called the Elgins for a minute," Williams says, "until we found out that there was another group by that name. That's when we came up with the name the Temptations." Williams credits the name to an acquaintance, Bill Mitchell, who was hanging around with the group outside of Motown Records. "Mitchell was tossing around names and came up with the Temptations." The rest of the group agreed and Mitchell hollered up to the legal department, 'Put the Temptations on the contract!'"
The Temptations have been one of the most successful vocal groups in history with hits like "The Way You Do the Things You Do," "My Girl," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep," "I Wish It Would Rain," "I Can't Get Next to You," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" and many others.
The current group consists of Otis Williams, Harry McGilberry, Jr., Ron Tyson, Terry Weeks and Barrington "Bo" Henderson. "Our success is probably a culmination of different reasons," Williams continues. "We're a product of the sixties, which has been noted as the most tumultuous decade in the last hundred years. And within that, here comes Motown breaking down all kinds of barriers. And people are still living off those memories from that time. We've been very blessed."
