The Temptations bring their generations-spanning sound to Harrah's South Shore Room tonight and Saturday. Published 2:15 AM PST Friday, Feb. 28, 2003 By Mel Shields -- Bee Correspondent Lake Tahoe's Big Chill is a new event, getting its test run beginning today and continuing through March 9. It's subtitled "The First Annual Celebration of Family, Friends and Fun," and the calendar is full of activities for both those who hit the slopes and those who stay behind and drink hot cocoa. Some of the activities are purely promotional and come with a fee, but others are unique and free; it's all designed to showcase the South Shore of Lake Tahoe during one of its most beautiful seasons. (In the meantime, a little more snow would be nice.) Sponsored by both Harrah's and Harveys (Harrah's bought Harveys in May 2001), along with Heavenly, Marriott, Coca-Cola and Budweiser, the Big Chill is organized under a series of subthemes: the Big Family and Friends Reunion, the Big Adventure, the Big Easy, the Big Show, the Big Chance. The best way to get an overall picture would be to look at what's happening Saturday. The Temptations, one of the few groups still around offering music that appeals to all generations, play at 8 p.m. (also tonight) in Harrah's South Shore Room ($50; 800-427-7247). An art exhibit is featured at Harveys from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Sun and Snow Barbecue and Chili Cook-Off is happening all day at Harveys. There's a Big Night Out for Singles at Club Altitude at Harrah's, starting at 10 p.m. ($10). The Snow Jam Karaoke Contest is free at Harrah's Casino Center Stage from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Two treasure hunts take place citywide, one for adults and one for families, with free registration at the hotels' concierge desks. The Far West freestyle aerial ski competition is free at Heavenly, and the 1 p.m. Emerald Bay cruise aboard the M.S. Dixie out of Zephyr Cove is $12. Each day has its own festivities, with many activities taking place every day (the Emerald Bay cruise, for example). You may also want to check out the Warren Miller ski film "Snow Jam" at Harrah's Casino Center Stage, free on Sunday; snowmobile tours out of Zephyr Cove, offered Monday through next Friday at a $15 discount; children's snow-tubing derby at Heavenly on Wednesday; ice-carving display and demonstration at the Heavenly Gondola and Marriott Courtyard, Wednesday-Thursday; the daily yoga classes at Harrah's pool ($25); a Snow Monsters Big Shebang at Heavenly next Friday ($5 entry); torchlight parade and fireworks display, and a kinder cup, both at Heavenly on March 8; $10 off the popular dinner-dance cruise on the Tahoe Queen out of Ski Run Marina, March 8; and special wine and food pairings nightly at Harveys' Llewellyn's and Sage Room restaurants, and Harrah's Friday's Station and Summit restaurants. You may also take advantage of special spa and massage packages, listen for some classical music at sunset in various locations, and go on some horse-drawn sleigh rides. Tahoe's Big Chill is out to remind visitors that some California casinos are big and splashy, but few have Lake Tahoe in their front yard and the Sierra ski slopes in their back yard. For more information: Harrah's: (800) 427-7247; Harveys: (800) 553-1022, or www.laketahoesbigchill.com.

Here is a review of those 2 concerts posted by G Elaine on the Quick Topic Temptations Concert Review Board:
On Friday night I had a great second row aisle seat on HARRY's side. The guys came out ready to take charge of the crowd wearing the red jackets, black shirts with sparkling buttons, black pants, black patent leather shoes and the "T" belts. Applauds, cheers, and screams began immediately and continued throughout the show. The crowd was involved in the performance and the Tempts gave us one that full of energy, laughter and fun. After the usual songs Otis told us about his book. When Otis announced the medley, I was sure I was in a dream world somewhere because I was floating. "Memories" started the medley which included (and I am not positive of this) "It's Growing, Since I Lost My Baby, You've Got to Earn It, My Baby, Don't Look Back, I Know I'm Losing You, I Could Never Love Another, Please Return Your Love to Me". At various times there would be groups of fans up in front of the stage dancing and screaming. HARRY, of course, in his usual mischief, was cutting up and that just encouraged the fans to do the same. All 5 Tempts made the songs feel sensual and seductive. My TERRY was at the top of his game and I found myself screaming, standing after each of his leads and acting like a silly teenager...hahaha. I was sitting next to a couple from the East Coast and they were just surprised and amazed, saying it was the best concert they could remember. When the guys were shaking hands, I heard HARRY say to one of the fans (a particularly demonstrative one) that she had been cutting up and I had to laugh. Afterwards, fans that did not have tickets for the next night were lining up at the box office but of course, it was sold out. The show was perfect! How do they do that? It was so excitng to go back to another show on Saturday night. The Tempts were so handsome and elegant in black tuxedo pants, white shirts with black strips on the collar and around the wrists, white jackets with black hankies and black patent shoes. Because I had been starving for a concert, Friday night was like a blur and I can not remember to much. I cried when TERRY sang "Enchanted Evening" it was so beautiful...sigh. Lake Tahoe is in the Sierra mountains and Otis said singing and dancing in the high altitude was not easy. Ron asked if anyone had any oxygen out there...LOL. The heat was on in the theater and when Ron wiped sweat from his brow, OTIS laughed. YES, it's true, MR. COOL actually sweated and I saw it with my own eyes from my 4th row center seat. He danced and pranced like I have never seen before. On Saturday, I realized that OTIS presented the medley by describing the social, political and economic times of the '60 and how Motown is a part of the history during that period. It gave me goose bumps. My sister says she felt the Tempts suggested and encouraged a "feeling" of reflection where each of the fans could enter our own private world of "Memories". They provided wonderful harmony as a vehicle to the past. BARRINGTON was sensational and HARRY kept teasing us with the extra bass and BOOM during the medley. When TERRY got up to sing his leads, he tore the place up! He seemed to get energy from the cheering and delivered a performance I feel honored to have witnessed. At the end, TERRY was the first to step back for the line-up exit. Well, he was dancing so sexy I had to rush out and splash cold water on my face...LOL. After the show I met another fan from Sacramento that shares our "enthusiasm" and it was nice to talk with someone that understood how I felt. She knows where we are and I hope she will decide to join us and give a review also.

It appears that SOMEBODY thinks these guys are good. I know they are! And it also appears that they are singing the classic songs in a medley like Mike wants them to meaning they are singing more of their own material. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....sounds like a show I would love to see!!!!!!!!!!! Now if we can get these narrow minded review people to open their eyes, ears and mind for one show like I did and see for themselves that they are pretty darn good and give them their props.!!!! ;D ;D

I felt that no one could take Melvin's place and I wasn't too keen on seeing anyone sing lead except Ali. (ABA you know how I feel about Ali) but after seeing them perform live 2 years ago I became a fan and I drove to Lousiana a couple of months later to see them again.

Open mind, eyes and ears can be treated to wonderful things, Kim. It happened to me when I saw the Review. Before you judge them see them. I was not a big Terry fan when i first saw him but I thought he could sing. Then a few live shows I saw he didn't sound that good for whatever reason. Then I saw him again and said Hmmmmmmmm the young man can sing. They are still good. And I know this next statement will make some mad but their stage act is much more polished that the review at this point and time. They have the big machinery behind them and that gives them an advantage but they are good on their own merit. And it appears from the reviews we are getting that they change their show to fit the venue they are performing at. That's always a good thing. The Review is great and can reach those levels but they are not there yet. I had a great time at the Review show and I thought they were fan friendly and could sing their butts off and I will now go to see both no matter where they are. But O's group is the better group to me right now at this moment in time. It is just my opinion having now seen both groups. I invite the others to see both with the same openess and enjoyment I got out of it. You won't be mad at either show. Don't rush to judgement and don't go in with a closed mind. You might be surprised at what you might find!!!!! ;D ;D

Well I went to the show with a close mind. My cousin asked me to attend and I did. I was very surprised. Terry instantly became my favorite. He walked up and down the aisle while singing. He kissed a few ladies cheeks and one older woman didn't want to let him go. ( which brought a smile to his face) Bo sung "Treat Her Like A Lady" now mind you I'm a big Ali fan.....I was pleased with his performance of the tune. Ron and Otis didn't have to win me over because I had witnessed them in concert before all and all I was so pleased that I purchased "Ear" the very next day.

This is my all time favorite stage outfits that the fellas wear.Oh yeah, the beloved "Lifesavers Suits"! Second only (to me) to the phenominal "Sherbert Suits"! Which may be one of the best grouping of uniforms they've ever worn!!! Then I saw [Terry] again and said Hmmmmmmmm the young man can sing. And something else you can say in Terry's favor is that he's a good PERSON. Not to say the rest of the Tempts are evil incarnate or anything, but I long ago learned that just because someone is a good singer, doesn't mean they're someone you'd set up as a role model for your kids. but their stage act is much more polished that the review at this point and time.Yeah, I'd agree but I think that's why you have to be a fan of BOTH groups in order to get the full package. The Tempts are more polished visually and the Review has the singers. Put them together and you've got the closest you're gonna get to recapturing the Classic Tempts' mystique.

Ivory when I first saw the guys on stage and they were matched from head to toe I was like OH WOW.... now normally a dude in red or white shoes would turn me off but they were clean! I was like okay they are good eye candy let me hear those chops. Once I heard the voices I was like okay they are cool.

Yeah, that's what I like about the Sherbert suits so much. Otis wears pink for crying out loud! Only REAL men can pull of wearing pastels like that. I mean, the only other MAN I know who can pull off wearing pink head to toe is Bootsie Collins. And don't even get me STARTED on their perfectly matched socks!!!! There's nothing I love more on a man then when his socks look right!

I'm so glad to hear these comments about keeping an open mind about the current Tempts group. The Review have the advantage of Dennis' and David Sea's fantastic voices - but let's not take anything away from Ron, Terry & Bo. They aren't the ORIGINAL lead singers - but they sure can SING!! ;D ;D The purple suits with the matching microphones have GOT to be my current pick. Purple is my favorite color -don't they look delicious?

[/IMG] This is my all time favorite stage outfits that the fellas wear. I guess because these are the outfits they were wearing when I first saw this lineup perform in concert.
Pardon my ignorance, as I am classic 5 myopic. (Or something like that...) But *who* is that guy in the red?! Have mercy. ;D Peach
