LOS ANGELES, Feb 12, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Motown Records' first A&R director/vice president William "Mickey" Stevenson launches Stevenson International Entertainment Group (SIE Group), a multi-faceted music and entertainment company. SIE Group's divisions include: Mikim Music, a publishing company and recording facility with a music catalog that spans over 30 years (Jay-Z's current album features a sample); B&W Management, representing up-and-coming signed and unsigned artists; and Stevenson Productions, specializing in live stage shows.
Stevenson says, "In business, I have always been driven by the creative process. With SIE Group, I am working to merge the traditional ways of nurturing talent
-- as we did at Motown -- with the current business opportunities available
today, such as branding and licensing."
In former chairman and founder of Motown Records Berry Gordy's autobiography, "To Be Loved," he says, "Mickey was a guy with a kind of talent that I wanted. It was really with Mickey that I began something that was unique to my management style. He was one of the greatest creative forces during our formative years."
Stevenson penned #1 smash hits like "Dancing in the Streets"; helped to discover and develop talent like The Four Tops, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye; and wrote, composed and produced a number of award-winning musical stage productions. As songwriter, playwright, producer, manager and CEO, he has become a major player in negotiating profitable deals in the entertainment industry -- such as the multimillion-dollar deal he landed for singer/songwriter/producer Novel (Rawkus/MCA records), whose album is launching with a 13-city tour with The Roots. (Novel is the grandson of Solomon Burke, "The King of Rock Soul," who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.)
Recently, Stevenson was exclusively chosen by The Stronghold Group to represent Motown music legends for the licensing of their names and images for Universal Music Enterprises' innovative merchandising program. He can also be seen in the feature film "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" for his role in assembling studio musicians the Funk Brothers, including Benny Benjamin, who will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in March.
