In my opinion, "Legacy" is easily the best work The Temptations have done since the miniseries gave them a "comeback". Here is my "critique" of some of the better songs:
'Round Here: This is a very good song. It's one of my favorites on the album. The production reminds me of the funky "social commentary" songs during the Norman Whitfield days. The only downside is Terry. As with a few of the songs on this album, this is a song that has potenial, but lacks a powerful lead singer.
Stay Together: This is a great song. Joe owns this one! In my opinion...Joe is THE MAN. Plain and simple. This has some nice harmonies, and a great backing track.
You Are Necessary In My Life: This is a highlight of the album. It has great group vocals, and GC in particular provides some really great ad libs at the end. This is the type of music that The Temptations need to keep doing. I'd like to see Ron do a ballad like this on the next album.
Why Can't We Be Loving Friends: I love this song. This is GC Cameron's greatest moment on the whole album. He delivered a consistently good performance throughout, but he really shines here. This is his greatest achievment yet as a group member.
Never Let You Down: As with 'Round Here, this is a good song lacking that extra "push" that the song needs. Although, the backing track is quite good. The background vocals, along with the music make this the most "Temptations sounding" song on the album. It also has a nice "care free" style that ends the album on a nice note
In the end, I'd give this album three out of five stars. It's not perfect, but it's the most consistent recording the group has done in several years. The main problem with the group today is Terry. If they brought back Theo and used GC as a "lead" singer(technically, GC Cameron is in the baritone position, acting as a replacment to Paul Williams), the group would be much more "accessible". The music can often have a cheezy 80's quality to it, but I look at it as a step forward. I'd rather hear this than the hip hop mistake of an album that "Ear-Resistable" was.
