This is a for-radio interview conducted of the Tempts in 1986. A lot of things we've been discussing lately (Otis role as the "leader," Richard's work at Motown aside from the group, whether Melvin can speak in baritone....) are discussed here, so I thought I'd share it.
In the first clip, the guys introduce themselves and Melvin discusses that Otis is the leader of the group and what a good leader he is. They go on to talk about their early musical influences and Ron. accompanied by the group gives an impromptu, acapella rendition of a gospel song. Love it!

In the second clip, Richard talks about working with Berry Gordy (listen to him talk about how much he adores the man) and they talk about Normal Whitfiled, his style and some of the writing the Tempts did for themselves.

In the third clip, Richard talks about, "Tear Stained Letter" a song that made it onto the "Lost and Found" album (and if you don't have this album, what kind of a Tempt fan are you?!) Richard and Otis talk more about Normal and Holland Dozier Holland. I LOVE Richard telling the story about the competition between Smokey and Norman, so FUNNY! At the end of the clip is one of my all-time favorite Tempts "moments" Otis making fun of Melvin and his voice and how he uses it to flirt with women. "My man's voice drop FO octaves!" "Want some candy little girl?" ....... then, they talk about how the Tempts lost the recording of "Do You Love Me" to the Contours (which you will notice is pronounced "con-TOURS" that's 'bama you see. ha ha) Anyway, it's a nice story, but one thing you'll notice is how O gets the name of the church wrong and Melvin corrects him, just an example of something that I noticed happened often in interviews they did. Read into that what you will. But the BEST part is O's line at the end, Blu says "savoir faire" to which O replies "savoir faire! can I play wit'cho hayah?" funny.

The next clip talks about why they write and record songs for WOMEN primarily .......... the story behind "The Way You Do the Things You Do" (O recounts the scene from the movie where David cries over becoming a success_ ......... how they initially didn't like "Papa" (now you tell me if I'm hearing things, but does O say "he was drugged" when talking about Dennis recording "Papa"?) ............ Otis goes on to talk about what a great influence Paul was in the group's choreography and how they owe so much to him.

The last clip talks about why My Girl is their greatest recording........... the "Temptations' Walk" and where it came from ............. how they were inspired to record "Clound nine" .......... when Dennis joined the group (Ron talks about seeing him on TCB) ............... what they'll be doing years from now ................ and what their long-term legacy will be.
