You guys clarify something for me, are you saying that Glenn was the tenor on "Silent Night"?? On the one we hear virtually EVERYwhere, every Christmas season?...Yes he is. The one where Dennis and Melvin both have leads, I think Melvin starts it (with Glenn ooohooooing in the background, then Dennis sings "In my mind I want you to be free...etc".., then Glenn's glorious voice rises to the stratosphere...Yep that's Glenn . Eddie also sang a version, and it was virtually a solo, with the other Tempts just humming in the background mostly, on an earlier X-mas CD by the Tempts.

Thanks for clearing that up....I always thought it was Eddie on the one is played every Christmas. I am familiar with the other version which I thought was "terrible" I'm sorry to hear that it was Eddie's.

But nothing like the wonderful arrangement done on the version Glenn sings on.

...and I still have to keep asking myself the question "What if Glenn had been first?" in the Tempts... What if he had had the Smokey songs and the promotion that Motown was giving the Tempts at the beginning? Would Eddie have been patterning himself after Glenn, given the switch? What if Richard or Theo had been first? What if they recorded "My Girl" first, would David have patterned himself after them?

This is the one song that brings a tear to my eyes every time that I hear it and or do Melvin's part whenever I have performed during the Christmas seasons. Glenn does something with that particular tune that brings Eddie to mind. The fact of the matter is I can never seem to get into the holiday spirit until I hear it. Glenn's vocal abilities were superb, but my hat goes off to Ron. I have listened to his vocal stylings for a long time and I have to give the gentleman his props. Eddie also sang a version, and it was virtually a solo, with the other Tempts just humming in the background mostly, on an earlier X-mas CD by the Tempts.

What if Smokey had kept My Girl for himself and the Temps never got a hit, disbanded, and this was a Miracles fans board? ;D This should start a good one! :wtg ...what can make me feel this way...

What if Richard or Theo had been first? What if they recorded "My Girl" first, would David have patterned himself after them? Well, the title of this thread is "Is it possible Glenn was the best tenor." Putting Glenn on somewhat equal footing with Eddie. IMO they are equal but different, talent and voice wise... which is why I posed the question. Now, if you put Richard and/or Theo on 'equal but different' level talent-wise with David...that's on you. apples and kumquats to me.

I don't put Glenn on the same level as Eddie...Eddie was the best.In my humble opinion. I'm aware of what the title of this thread is,just like I'm aware that it's compairing both tenors. With that said..I made a statement and posed a question.Aren't we expressing our opinions?Good...I'm expressing mine.

Why not Diana Ross in the Miracles since we want to play pretend? No, no, no! She would just be a back-up to Smokey, Eddie, and Paul and would have thrown hissy fits! "Call me Miss Ross"!! ;D ...I never met her but I can't forget her...

With that said..I made a statement and posed a question.Aren't we expressing our opinions?Good...I'm expressing mine. And that's fine . I love both of them, and was obviously just being hypothetical, since I feel a lot of the reason for Glenn's 'under-recognition' was a matter of bad timing, inferior (to Smokey and Whitfield etc.) writing and/or lack of promotion of the group during his tenure there. That was the whole point of my hypothetical question. Eddie had amazing talent, and amazing talent to back him up (writing, promotion, vocally.) To me, IMO, Glenn had one out of those three, along with 'amazing talent' in himself. I just didn't feel that putting Richard/Theo/David in the mix was answering the question. If you feel that Glenn is on the same level with Richard/Theo as far as comparison purposes... that's your right. I disagree, that's all.
