Ok, so I got a whole weeks vacation. What do I do? Head to sunny Virginia. For those faithful TemptsInfo board viewers, you'll remember that one of my best gal pals Fair Lady Soul lives there, owns a bed and breakfast. That makes it all too convenient for Mr. Ivory (he wants me to point out that he has a name, but don't all of us?) and I to nest there for a bit. Now it just so happens that Fair Lady Soul lives about an hour and a half from one of my other best gal pals, our very own TemptsInfo Head Research Librarian, Miss Jonel! (everybody give it up for Jonel! ) So FLS, Mr. Ivory and I decided to pay Miss Jonel a visit on Monday that worked out well because she just so happened to take the afternoon off so she could meet us. We agreed to meet at the Lexington visitors' center located just a few blocks from two colleges and several historical attractions. Pretty soon Jonel showed up and after exchanging some hugs out the door we went. Our first stop was the Stonewall Jackson house www.stonewalljackson.org/ Because she used to work there she was able to give us a special tour complete with all the behind the scenes info and views. We even got to go upstairs!!!!! Our next stop was a vintage clothing shop that Jonel used to co-own called (what else?) "Tempt Me." Reflective of it's former owner, we found a classy establishment! After stopping at the health food store for a snack (FLS and Mr. Ivory like to eat weird sh*t) we continued on to the campus of Washington and Lee University. A beautiful campus, columns on everything. Located on the campus is the Lee Chapel, what Jonel half-jokingly refers to as "The Shrine of the Confederacy." leechapel.wlu.edu/ It's a very lovely chapel that houses the remains of Robert E. Lee, leader of the Confederate Army during the Civil War and hero to peckerwoods everywhere. It beautiful inside, but I must say the "statue" of him on his death bed did creep me out a little bit. Lee's not actually buried there. He's down in the family crypt directly underneath. There's a mini-museum there next to the crypt. We noticed while we were down there that previous visitors had hurled little confederate flags as a sign of tribute to this famous general. We all remarked how abusurd these crazy people were until we realized that we'd all fling something equally as absurd if we were standing over the grave of Melvin Franklin. Not having any confederate flags on me at the time, I did what I considered to be the next most appropriate thing ........... I went to a bathroom located near the Civil War leader's remains and took a pee. ........... we did however show proper reverence to Lee's horse Traveler ........... or was it Trigger (let's all have a moment of silence for the horse, he was just an innocent beast of burden after all.) He is buried just outside the Chapel.

Now comes the BEST part!!!! We went to VMI to check out the cutie pie cadets ........... I mean key-dets. I didn't realize they were so wonderful until after passing about the third or forth group of them and noticed that they were ALL tipping their hats to us and saying "goodday mam." www.vmi.edu/Show.asp?durki=2 So apparently it's a law or something. I got out in front of Mr. Ivory and made it a point of walking in front of as many key-dets as I could just so I could get a hat-tip. Ok, I'll admit it, I guess there is ONE thing that's great about southern traditions. Gentelmen! Jonel and FLS scooched almost all the way into the barrakcs area because they wanted to see the same place they'd seen on TV so many times, where the "rats" are broken. I was scared to, I was afraid someone would make me do push ups or something. STRANGE things going on in there. And these people VOLUNTEER for it!!!!!

Well it was a hot day and we were t'ard (that's what you get in the south you know, t'ard) so we stop into this homey little bar and had ice cream sodas! Yum!!!! Pretty soon it was time to meet Mr. Jonel for dinner at Applebees, so off we went. Mr. Jonel is just as sweet and wonderful as Jonel is, only maybe a LEETLE funnier. Cracks me up We all ordered and they made me look like a sot by being the ONLY person at the table to order a drink, a rather STRONG drink that affected me so much I didn't speak for a good 20 minutes, so you know that was some hard stuff. Of course part of the reason it affected me was because I was trying to finish before Jonel's daughter "Leslet" joined us. She had been at dance class but met us just in time for dinner. She's a doll. The Jonel family are the most adoably down-home people you'll ever meet. Salt of the Earth. ............. oh, I forgot to say that FLS embarrassed me by bringing in her GIANT calendar into Applebees to book appointments to her B&B while we were eating. Which she did. Gotta make that money!!!! Before we knew it it was time to head home and into our respective cards we hopped. I always enjoy spending time with fellow board memebers but it always makes me sad to think we can't do it more often. ~the end~

I thought you lived in North Carolina. If it makes you feel any better, there were hundreds of thousands of people in Virginia I didn't see either.

I forgot to say............ Last Sunday night FLS and I were in the kitchen, she said "let's see what's on TV" and turned it on. American Dreams popped up and after about a minute and a half, who should appear on the screen but B2K doing their Temptations act. I missed it the first time around, so it was cool to just flip on the TV and there it was! Yep, it was still awful.
