The Temptations were at (1) time stood alone #1. There were many personnel changes. The Tempts had the voices:
David Ruffin
Dennis Edwards
Eddie Kendricks
Paul Williams
Melvin Franklin
Ollie Woodson
Theo Peoples
Of course there were others but these were the voices that made the CD's.....and many of them became classics.
The Loss of Eddie and Paul in my opinion was the biggest hole that the tempts never fixed. Once Eddie and Paul joined Otis' and the Distants then they really became a solid singing group.
The greatest loss of the Temptations was the SOUND. Well where did the sound come from?
1. The voices of the Original5/plus Dennis
2. Norman Whitfield produced some of the absolute best Temptation songs and albums
3. The Funk Brothers - The Temptations had some gifted musicians and as Melvin said "...and the band played on"
The band (funk brothers) and Noramn Whitfield was really the sixth Temptation. After the album 1990 they went with Jeffrey Bowen and "a Song for You" was a really great album, what made the album great was Anthony Carmicheal who was behind the Commadores. Albums following were good but lacked that quality of the 6th Temptation.
In the 80's the Temptations hooked up with x-members of earth, wind and fire and we had "Truly for You" a good album, if fact every song was nice......but they did not stay with the producers and the following albums we good but not on the level with the sixth Temptation.
"Phoenix Rising" and "For Lovers Only" were the exceptions, but the rest up to Back to front were good and some just OK.
When I listen to the early Temptations with smokey the band was in place bringing out that Temptation sound. Norman took over and took the BAND and the Temptations to a new height. Barret Strong was a very important part of the sixth Temptation. After he left Norman's music seemed to have something missing, "great lyrics"
You see the 6th Temptation played a vital part in the greatness of the group. You don't here any more the great guitar's and basses. The Tempts don't even jam like they used too. That made the albums great, especially the songs with long version. Remember "runaway child running wild" THE BAND made that one great. What made "papa ws a rolling stone" a grammy award winning song........The band, norman and barret
This Doctor is a Tempts Fan........But I really miss the 6th Temptation
