No, see, the question was who was the greatest or whether Robeson was better than Melvin. I think Robeson gets the edge much like Eddie Kendricks does just because there were the originators (kind of.) I just think it's a rare thing when a bass singer sings lead and it sounds good. At least when the Tempts do it. I like "Ol Man" because the background harmony kicks natural hind end, but take "I Truly Believe" for example, OUCH! Err..... Ms Perry Mason, quit trying to squirm out of what you said. Also, who said that Robeson was the "originator" of that song?

Nupe, I'm not squirming out of sh*t, I'm TELLING WHAT I'm thinking. As for who said Robeson was the originator, *I* did. Just like Eddie wasn't the first man to sing falsetto, he was in many ways the mold by which other singers were cast. The SAME way Robeson was. temptsinfo.com/smilies/wtg.gif

Just like Eddie wasn't the first man to sing falsetto, he was in many ways the mold by which other singers were cast. The SAME way Robeson was. Did I strike a nerve? I sense some tension here. Be lady-like and nice please. I KNOW you said Robeson was the originator. I did a little research on the subject. The song was written by Rogers and Hamerstien. Bing Crosby recorded the song January 1928. The song was in the pop top 10 for eleven weeks, reaching no.1 for one week. William Warfield a renowned baritone/bass singer is best known for his reindition of the song Ol' Man River in the 1951 Hollywood film "Showboat". My thoughts are that Mr Robeson could be recieving too much credit from you and your colleagues for being the so-called originator of Ol' Man River. In my opinion theses two gentlemen, could have been influences for the Flamingo's performing the song. We already know who influenced the Temptations, it WAS not Mr. Robeson!! It is my guess that Crosby and Mr Warfield both could be credited with giving the song both national and international exposure. Thus influencing the Flamingos and others. I haven't heard Crosby's version, but I have certainly seen Mr. Warwick's stirring performance in the movie. If you don't think that the original version was an embarassment for Black people, check out the original lyrics of the song out before the Tempts cleaned it up. You said originator and later originator 'kind of'. HE either was, or was not. In my opinion , here clearly, HE WAS NOT!! I however, do agree that he did influence people. ;D I'm thinking here too, also I have facts to support my thoughts. I also don't think it's fair to the members of the board to be censored or have their threads locked when they resort to profanity in their posts, when you do the exact thing! Using punctuations to "clean-up" your texts doesn't totally exempt YOU. People can read between your asterisks* Fair play is simply fair play. Why bring Eddie into this? He did his thing and people patterned themselves after him. I have not heard the same about Mr. Robeson. He, however has earned my respect as being a true renaissance man, athlete, scholar, lawyer, singer, actor, activist, last but not least, Black American. Peace, Your loving "Nupey" P.S. I like it when you call me Big "NU-PEY" Throw ya' hands in air, like you don't care.

Well, just like you totally misunderstood what I was saying about bass lead singers, you totally misunderstood my last post. Chill sweetie, I wasn't upset. But since you you weren't a Temptation in 1967 (or whenever the song was recorded by the Tempts) you can't really say who WASN'T their influence. I'm not disagreeing with you about the Flamingos, but as you said yourself, Robeson probably helped put the idea in THEIR heads. Or it could have been some white dude named "Bing." Actually, I've known the original lyrics for quite some time, but I think you're confusing me with someone else, I never said anything about that. Well, I'm glad we finally agree. No my dear, that wasn't anything even close. I have no problem with anyone saying "fuck" on the board. I DO however have a problem with a poster saying to another poster "fuck you" (well except Mike and I, but we're special) or being as beligerent as he seemed to be. (Now, I'll be happy to take the * out of the word, if anyone complains can I refer them to you? Anyway, we're once again throwing the "censor" word around like it's nothing. I didn't censor the child, his post is still there isn't it? I locked the thread because there was no need for everyone to comment on his post. Comprende? Kinda like Paul Robeson. Now, what is WITH everyone lately. We seem to be in a constant state of wadded-pantyness. It's really not all that serious. passing chill pills around the room....
