Is it just me ,or are these two movies shockingly similar ? I wonder if Robert Townsend was sneakin' a peek at Otis' book while he was makin' this movie. What do you think?

I think that many of the stories about singing group back then are going to be strickingly similar.

This movie was done well before Otis wrote his book, I believe. As a matter of fact, Robert Townsend wanted it to be about the Temptations but Otis said no because he had plans to do his own. So instead they said it was about the Dells. I don't think those plans were in place at the time so you could say long range plans to do a movie after he wrote the book.

This movie was done well before Otis wrote his book, I believe. Otis' book came out in '88, three years before T5H. It's just that,to me, some scenes from T5H mirror the Temptations. Did you notice the photos in the movie even looked like the Tempts.

Yeah I did...but otis said to me once in Atlantic city that Robert had asked him to do a movie and he said he had some plans of his own to mayby do one. I was off the book date but I know otis turned him down on the movie deal.....

Now correct me if I'm wrong (which I'm sure one of you will....... , but I remember reading at the time that T5H came out that it was "loosely-based" on Motown, it was a composite of Motown groups and that the Dells did all the singing for the movie but that it was NOT their story. Also around that time I believe Robert Townsend had his show on HBO and on one of the episodes he also said the same thing. And, did you ever notice the bloopers in T5H...... ;D there were a few ! Well, that's just my 2 cents anyway...... temptsinfo.com/smilies/wtg.gif

I agree, most of the stories of that era will probably sound and look very much the same, but I'm glad that both movies were made.

it's really interesting that people thought that Dreamgirls was loosely based on the story of the supremes. And the writer said that he thought it could have been loosely based on any popular music group.

After watching both back to back, there are a lot of simularities. I think Eddie Kane is losely based on David. But I also feel that the T5H is its own story which accourding to the end of the movie is based on the Dells, they were technical advisors.

I think he was too. Eddie seemed to be more human.

Funny, I was about to ask that question. I DEFINITELY think that The Five Heartbeats were loosely based on the Temptations...but it could've been about other groups too. And yeah, the Dells did all of the singing, I think. I was always a little confused though. But ask me this, did Robert and Leon sing their real voices with the other Dells in the movie? I never understood that and that scene where JT and Flash have a sing-off, you could tell your boys were lip-synching like hell. LOL :laughing I love the movie too and about the Temptations' own movie... it was slightly better than the Five Heartbeats in a sense that in the Five Heartbeats during the '70s used sounds from the '80s, it sounded strange they would play 1984-type of songs in 1972. :laughing Oh, I'm new by the way. Wassup.
