another one of mike's fab cd's - live at the copa- has a different feel than the tempts live recorded with david. the copa has dennis. when i heard dennis sing i wish it would rain, it was an excellent rendition. he also did i could never love another, and although we first equate these to david, dennis really filled a big void in the live power of his vocals.
i know a bunch of you love dennis doing losing you on tcb or was it git?
i loved his motown 25 -ain't too proud and his losin you .
what david songs do you like dennis' versions of?

ooooh, i heard ''you're my everything'' on the copa cd! when dennis takes the lead over from eddie, what a great rendition! dennis would've made david proud! in fact, david and eddie probably wouldn't have made dennis a partner when they worked together if they thought he was anything less than terrific!

wow, the more i listen to dennis, the more i feel he was the right guy to replace ruff. when dennis did i could never love another after loving you- he hits the high notes, sings with such power. i also like dennis singing the impossible dream- which david did a fab job originally. dennis sure can sing david ruffin tunes!

"I'm Losin' You" on T.C.B. I DON'T mean to say it was better than David's - never. But the impassioned vocal and the soul dripping from his cords was definitely a great homage to David.

It is for those above mentioned reasons that I picked Dennis as my favorite. He not only brought his own game to the table but he took on the most difficult challenge of any singer in history. To replace a lead singer of the most famous group of all time at their height and not miss a beat is something to marvel at.

But it WAS, so it's perfectly ok if you do. 9-)

and the thing that adds more icing to the cake is that dennis never admits or boasts about his talent, but was humble about it from the get go and always gives credit to the hof's he worked with. i like dennis' copa live version of '' i could never love another after loving you''- it is definitely tops. he hits the high note-can't believe my ears- and i can't believe mine either!

I'm not in any position to judge Dennis voice in this particular situation, but does one necessarily have to be better? Can't one be as good as another? If one singer sang the same song twice, one performance could be better than another, but because they're not the same singer (even though it's the same song), making comparisons just doesn't feel right.
But carry on, if you must...

If one singer sang the same song twice, one performance could be better than another, but because they're not the same singer (even though it's the same song), making comparisons just doesn't feel right. But carry on, if you must... IRLM, interesting point, kitten. I agree with you on your basic premise that Dennis' version of "I'm Losin' You" is as good as David's version - hence no Ruffin fan is seriously going to just faint when someone reveals they prefer Dennis' version. It's not that unbelievable that someone would prefer Dennis' because it's not like Dennis' is so extraordinarily horrible or just could never compare. Now, if Ivory would have said "I love this Pat Boone version of 'I'm Losing You'" (here's hoping such an abomination doesn't in fact exist), then I wouldn't even engage her in debate. I'd just say "She's off her rocker and there's no saving the gal." But I think part of why we can do these comparisons is that somewhere deep down - no matter what side we come out on, Dennis' or David's - we feel their talents are close enough that comparing them doesn't offend the artistic stature of the other. For instance - I want someone to slap me silly if I ever try to compare Marilyn Monroe's voice to Sarah Vaughan's. However, if I compare Sassy's voice to Ella F. or Carmen M., now that doesn't seem so offensive. I said all that to say, I think by subjecting Dennis and David to comparison, in a way we are already saying they are just as good as the other.
