Just something I wanted to get some people opinions on. What is the difference between "Otis Williams and the Distants" and David Ruffin and the Temptations". I know in the book Otis said David held a meeting and asked about it but they said "No". But why was it ok to have "Otis Williams and the Distants"? I just want to hear everybody's opinion.

In my opinion back in the day who ever formed the group or was the leader of the group usually got to be so and so and the so and so's. If Otis was not the sole founder of the group and Eddie was not the sole founder of the group it would be only fair to call themselve the who ever's. We know David did not start the group. He joined something that was there already. He may have been considered the best singer by some but that does not make you the leader. Otis says he was the leader of the Distants. So.....

I've thought the same exact thing, but that Otis Williams & The Distants name was taken by Johnnie Mae Matthews. And also, the arrival of Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks probably threw out that idea of having anybody's name in front of the group. According to Otis, him Blue,Corn, and Paul said no to the name change of David Ruffin and The Temptations. There's no way Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams are agreeing to that. I don't think a group that's known as having 5 lead singers should or would change their name to that.

I wonder who made all the organizational decisions afterThe Supremes became Diana Ross and the Supremes. Certainly it was never Flo, Mary, or Cindy. It would have to be someone who worked very hard, practiced endlessly, could deal with Berry, lawyers, accountants, etc.
Someone has to run the organization. David did not have self-discipline, did not even attend practices himself. How could he schedule practices and practice others? He could not deal with Berry? How is he going to deal with other managers, lawyers, accountants, etc.? Why in the world would anyone put someone's name in the front if he could not be depended upon for anything? The Temptations would have gone down the drain so fast, it would seem as if they were being sucked into a whirlpool.
He recorded a duet with his brother but never showed up for the final part of the recording session, and Jimmy had to sing his part too.
Otis, Melvin, Paul and Eddie worked too hard to succeed to let The Temptations be destroyed. Melvin always said that from the very beginning, they knew David only wanted to be a solo star and would not stay long. There's no way they would agree that the title should ever be "David Ruffin and the Temptations." It was simply never that kind of group. All contributed to it. Each one played an important part.

I just wonder why Eddie, Dennis and Paul joined David to form their own Temptations? Melvin was probably not able to do so because he was O's business partner ... But the others?

Are you wondering why they did not get together an form their own group Temptation's? I would say it had something to do with legality. Which on the other hand as Aba21 has suggested, would have definitely cost Money!!!!

Why -- if David was so unpleasant to work with -- did David, Eddie and Dennis get together again?(They actually did join.) And why did Paul, too, express his intent to work with David? I was just wondering whether the guys had ever worked with David Ruffin again, if he really was as destructive to the team as he usually is portrayed to have been ... Just wondering in response to ((janebe's)) post. Yeah, yeah ... I'm still in David's corner. lol AK

I would rather see a Temptations with Eddie, David and Dennis (possibly Jimmy Ruffin and 1 other guy) than the group Otis had without Blue. This is purely speculation, BUT wasn't this around the same time as the Motown Temptations Reunion.
I am making an educated guess that it was Otis's idea to do a reunion because he had to shut down the better group of Temptations.

Hi Mr. Aba! You mean they formed their own group just because they need to make money so badly that they even would put up with unruly David? AK

Jimmy may have joined these guys, I am quite sure of it, although he did not want to join the early Tempts because he didn't like the way they were managed. I don't think, though, he is really Temptations material. I love his voice and his rather "plain" delivery style, but he would not have fitted in with the other guys imo.

To answer the question how I would have voted, I'd say I had voted David out IF things had really been as bad as we have been told. (I still doubt the "official" story though.)
