It always takes more than the star to make it all happen. All those you named were quality players who sacrificed their own game for the ring ;D

True that true that ABA! I once heard a commentator say that James Worthy would be the franchise on any other team if he wasn't playing for the Lakers. Of course I'm sure James wouldn't want to sacrifice winning those championships for any amount of single glory. James had skill and I realized how much of that he possesed in the 1987 and 1988 seasons.

He may not have been as great somewhere else Kim. Sometime when you have as much talent as they did, you can't gaurd everybody so someone will be able to operate with less pressure and since you had to check Kareem and MAgic, James did what he did best! Now that doesn't mean he wasn't a great indivdual talent cause he was, but it's much easier to operate under the conditions he was in. It's tough being the main man. You attract a lot of attention in that role and that's why I have so much respect for those who do man that position. James would have been a star no matter where he played though!

You know what I used to love about that team ABA.... the way Magic would make you pay if you tried to double team him. I really believed he had eyes in the back of his head. He could find an open man quicker than any other point guard I've seen. Of course I heard that Oscar Robertson was the best of all time but I was so young when he retired I don't remember a lot about him as a player. Maurice Cheeks was good but to me Magic was the best point guard.

i loved the 1980-1991 magic led lakers.
one team that was very close to being to the finals in 1987 was the dallas mavericks. they had mark aguirre, derek harper, rolando blackman, james donaldson, sam perkins, and they went to a game 7 against the lakers in the western finals . they were a good team.
another scary team that year was the utah jazz-with mark eaton a7-5 monster that gave kareem fits as the jazz went to a game 7 as well.

Well each team other than the Spurs took them the distance, Utah, Dallas, Detroit they were trying to make history repeating and it wasn't going to be easy. Of course now everyone has repeated with the exception of San Antonio.

The Big O was just the best guard period. He averaged a triple double for a complete season. Now Magic's advantage is he could see over the guy that was guarding him. That's a huge advantage to have on the break or in a half court set.Chicago finally figured it out in 1991 when they put Scotty on him to keep from seeing the whole floor.
Suk...Dallas was a Derek Harper shot clock violation from ousting the Lakers. They were good.

Kim,
I never thought Byron or Coop would ever be coaches. But don't forget the great Bob McAdoo!!!
As for Ahmad and MJ, it reached a low point when MJ got sick in a Finals game and I thought 'ol Bobby Moore was going to donate blood or a kidney to MJ.
Like people haven't played sick??? Ask ABA how that is!!!
You know the REAL story on why that was Showtime?

ABA,
Thank you!! Pip was the difference because he put the heat on EJ.
As for the Mavs, the best trade that never happened:
James Worthy for Mark Aguirre and Roy Tarpley. Now you know what Jerry West was dealing with, for he shot that deal down quick.

No SS I don't know the real story on Showtime??
ABA I think that the Lakers could have beaten Chicago in 1991 if James wasn't injured. They beat them the first game with James in the lineup and they came close the other games they were missing that key piece of their puzzle in James. And the fact that Vladie(sp) (he is such a waste of skin in my opinon) played center instead of Michael Thompson cost them the series too. I think that Scottie Pippen is one of the most overated players in the league he is up there with Ewing in the overated department.

Big Bob was my neighbor in NJ. We go all the way back to the finals in NJCAA in Hutchinson Kansas in 1971. Then when I left Italy he went over and replaced me on the team I Was on!
But think about the advantage you would have if you could operate with a clear view of the play developing on front of you. It's magic I tell you! Magic!

No doubt his height was his advantage but let's face it ABA the brother played center in 1980 and helped the Lakers win the title without Kareem playing in the last game. He played forward for a couple of games against Detroit in the series that they won in 1988. The man had skills he was one of the few players who could take control in any position he played in.
I think the toughest person he had guarding him was Dennis Rodman in the 1988 series Dennis gave Magic a tough time.

Well Kim I have to agree with you on both points. They missed James and Scotty has never done anything for me. Now he was great a second banana but as a franchise player he was crap!. I think he quit when he played for Houston, he quit when Phil didn't set the last shot up for him against the Knicks and he has done nothing in Portland except steal money. How he became one of the top 50 players of all time is a mystery to me when you leave off Bob Lanier just to name one.
Don't get me started on this subject!!!

Not only Bob Lanier but Dominique Wilkins too! How could you pick Scottie Pippen and not Dominique is a mystery to me. I'm wondering would Scottie have been picked if he had never played next to Michael Jordan. And let's face it Jordan never did anything in the winning department until he started sharing the basketball.
