I just think maybe iratherlikeme likes them for the skills they're beginning to show on the court, not for their personal lives and what they do off the court. When it comes to skills, five years in prison may not necessarily make you a badder player than a sorry player whos never done anything bad in his life. Ok, it might make you a badder person. but not a badder player. But how should I know what iratherlikeme's thinkin? What am I, her clone? ;D Must be my clone. You're going around hitting nails right on their heads. You're good! ;D LOL, Mike. ;D

Back in the day of Mantle and Ruth, reporters turned their back on stories that were not sports related. Nobody cared what anybody else did off the field. It was not considered newsworthy. As the competiton increased for the exclusive story and to sell the newspapers it became dog eat dog. It has gone way over the top in recent years. You would not want someone reporting on your every move would you? Just because I make a lot of money does not mean a person has the right to report on what I'm doing at home. Nor does making a lot of money make me a better person who's smart enough to be able to discern whether I should have a drink or not, do some coke or not, act a fool or not. With money comes a certain amount of scrunity but my life should not be an open book. There are CEOs who make more money than all of us and you don't hear a word about them until they are caught. The difference is there are no reporters following them around to see what they're doing. And let me clear on thing up. People who go to games think that they pay the salaries of these high profile people and therefore have a say in what these people are supposed to be and act like. Sorry but the amount of money made from a team during the season could never pay for the salaries of the players. That money keeps the doors open. TV pays the salaries and dictates what time games are on, what days and who plays.

aba, you are once again correct. the problem we have out there is not what you do at home, but what people do in public. remember the teams and the movie studios were selling-ENTERTAINMENT. when you put that uniform on, you may have been motivated only by the sheer joy of the sport, or the thrill of victory, the accolades, the money , the fun of teamwork, whatever. but the fan didn't have tv back in babe ruth's time , and radio was barely getting going in 1921. the fan read the newspapers, word of mouth spread about ruth's feats, and lo and behold baseball was a national pastime.
IMAGE was the reason things were kept hush hush. they still to some degree worry about image. the 1994 -1995 baseball strike did so much damage to baseball players and baseball in general's IMAGE that the fans stayed away, TV ratings were way down, and it took YEARS and CAL RIPKEN'S IMAGE and iron man record to bring folks attention back to the sport. IMAGE was everything in the old days and still has a certain clout. off field antics DOES affect behavior at many instances. if you do drugs at home that may be your business. but if it keeps you from performing properly, or missing practices, or getting frequent bouts on the disabled list, that hurts more than you-it hurts the IMAGE of the sport,it hurts your teammates, and your fans.
aba, you've given out autographs. why did the kids want your autograph? would they have wanted your autograph if you beat up a reporter in public or if you were sitting in a car that was being used in a drive by or a drug deal?
IMAGE is still important. if you pick a profession that makes $$ but more importantly is HIGH PUBLIC PROFILE , then you take the media in with you . i don't agree with the media hounding people, but at least dr. j and magic and kobe and michael and wilt were good sports about the press.

Kim....you had to go there! That was awful. They must have gotten some food poisoning or something! ;D
Suk....image is everthing. how you live your life makes all the difference in the world. I worked hard on my image to get it where it is today. A small thing like being on time. i was never late to anything. I was never fined for missing practice, late to a game or to the airport or any meetings we had. If you now have a meeting with me, the one thing you better be is on time. you should be there early, not just on time. Always give yourself some extra time in case something goes wrong and if you get there early you have time to compose yourself and mentally get ready for your meeting. It is something I have followed my whole life.

Sukka,Bob Cousy? Quality person?Why did he chase Oscar Robertson out of Cincinnati? Because of the fact that Cousy couldn't guard Oscar when Cousy played for the Celtics ? Jackie Robinson,put up with racial "crap" but didn't support Muhammad Ali in his fight for the same thing ? Larry Bird ? Getting into barroom brawls ? Why not DR. J ? Why wasen't he mentioned? Why not Muhammad Ali ? Who is not flawed? You? Me ? I know of only one person that is flawless,GOD ! We STRIVE to be perfect,but we'll NEVER make it ! Maybe FAKE IT,but won't MAKE IT ! Because when it's all said and done,and Mother Nature's debt has to be paid,She does away with ALL distinctions,and levels ALL ranks; the prince and the beggar shall lie side by side! It is written " Remember Now Thy Creator,In The Days Of Thy Youth,While The Evil Days Come Not, Nor The Years Draw Nigh,When Thou Shalt Say ,I Have No Pleasure In Them." You know what I'm getting at ?

in God we trust. all others pay cash!
dr. j. -had a great image in the 70's and 80's . i looked up to him.
but, i was a little disappointed in the alexandra stevenson story. but , who am i to judge?
you can make cassius aloysius clay(muhammad ali) into a hero. i liked him. i think he was the greatest boxer-if he was at his prime today-muhammad ali would beat lewis, tyson, holyfield, douglas, and anybody else. he was not just a boxer- he was a thinking man lighting quick on his feet. sugar ray leonard tried to copy his style and was successful, but he was no ali. but he's another maryland-d.c. area guy i liked-do you feel me tb?
jackie robinson was probably not a big Nation of Islam fan, since Malcolm X had been labeled as a radical, and then was assasinated, and Martin Luther King Jr. had problems with Malcolm's message. Dr. King preached non violence, but he perceived the Nation of Islam's message to be the opposite. jackie was a peaceful man that did a lot for the inner city kids. don't rag on him just because you think he should stick up for someone who was right but at the time was perceived to be anti-patriotic since we were fighting a war. jackie worked within the system to effect change.

Were you as disappointed in the audlterial affairs of Otis Williams,Richard Street,Eddie Kendricks,Dennis Edwards,Theo Peoples,David Ruffin,Melvin Franklin,Ollie Woodson,Paul Williams,Dean Martin,Ronald Regan,Frank Sinatra,John Lennon ? Why DR.J ? How do you think Jackie Robinson was perceived at the time he took his stand ? As a saint? I disagree with you on the fact that I can't make MUHAMMAD ALI a hero,he did that on his own ! Didn't Larry Bird have a child out of wedlock,or you don't read FINE PRINT ? How many times does the Media report on stories when famous people get into trouble,but when they have been cleared,little to nothing is said ? Paula Poundstone? Front Page News about her child abuse case,but when THE TRUTH CAME OUT,a tiny article if that told of the misjustice. I can go on and on to prove my point,and will if I have to !BIG difference between a RAG and THE TRUTH !

out here in tinsel town, paula poundstone got the same coverage both ways. also, wynona was overblown to disgusting proportions.
the other folks you mentioned were tainted. i love sinatra's music and some movies. he was not a model citizen in any stretch of the imagination. but the music is classic. bing crosby-great talent but a tyrant with the family.
flawed like humans are. so love their talents, but don't follow in their footsteps in their errors. you have enough of your own to make.

the tale of 2 cities-
philadelphia= 15wins -4 losses start-now 19w-17l are only 4 and 13 in the last 17 games.
washington=6 wins-10 losses start-now 19w-18l are 13-8 in the last 21 games.
feel the heat mike? it's crowded-new orleans is 20-19, sixers are behind jersey,boston, detroit, and then they have to play west coast teams of which 8 teams have a better record than philly. but ,there's quite a lot of games left-46 to be exact-more than half the season-so if 76ers get healthy who knows? is mutombo out for the year?
oh, lakers were 10-18 now won 6 of 8 -now 16-20. shaq is back at full strength and the team is playing more together.
