This might be one of Ali's best songs. Do you agree? Would David have sounded better on this song? Who might have done it better? Did Ali Break the mold on this one? sharemation.com/imonfire/Hoops.wma

The cut on EOS box set is better than the one on Milestone lp. Prime example of what Jane was talking about in another thread, too much screaming, should have kept it simple, like he did on "Set Your Love Right" . Woodson sang without going to the extremes.

even with just Blu's part, that song would have been a classic!

I don't think Ali was screaming. He just hit those falsetto ad lib notes with more force than one who sings them with ease (like any first tenor in the group). He did this song like no one else could. I think the only one who could've done anywhere close is Bo. It sounds so much like a Gospel song. Theo could put a little more spice to Paul's leads. I also like the way Ali did lead on 'Soul to Soul' live performance on the Tonight Show clip, although the tempo was a little slower than the recorded version. These are two of my favoriet Tempations ballads, led by my favorite Temptations lead singer. The skinny dude with the Jeri curl.

I Love this song....I would have loved hearing it in Davids voice (wishful thought) but I think Ali blows the people away....hes got me running around looking for hoops, gasoline and a match.

Soul II Soul is Woodson's best, but the EOS cut of Hoops Of Fire sounds better than the cut on Milestone LP. Woodson tried to do too much. KISS method would have served him better.

But you know if they would've kept it simple, we wouldn't have loved it as much. We probably would have only liked it. Ali could've never kept it simple. His voice texture does not allow that.

The Eos cut proves that he could. He loses the feeling in the song with all the riffs, that he really didn't need. He just did it too much on the LP for my taste. I don't think that all the riffs, makes you a good singer. David would have done it different,so would Dennis. Theo is Paul-like in his singing....I would say that Theo could "hold the tradition"..you can't add anything to Paul's parts that Paul didn't already put there. Just like Theo doesn't add any spice to Levi's parts.
