oui mademoiselle? you may be a madamoiselle, but ''we'' aren't! ;D french is such a beautiful romantic language- and so useless in america. i took spanish when the rest of the class took french- and i was laughed at- well i guess the 33 million latinos in the u.s. vote with me!

I'm taking French as my required foreign language. I don't want to take Spanish. I tried it in 7th grade and I didn't like it enough to want to take it again.

it is a beautiful language, as is italian and portuguese and spanish, the romantic languages.
the practicality of it is not as highly esteemed as its beauty. unless you are french, go to france frequently, or to quebec or haiti or tahiti frequently, you won't remember much of it.
in spanish , you get a very lovely language that you can practice in nearly every state and in north, central, south americas and europe and parts of africa and the phillipines.

hey, IRLM, I with you. I took French and loved every minute. It also got me some delicious goodies in Martinique , knowing what to ask for... And made learning Spanish later a breeeeeze!

cool deal! martinique is a nice carribean paradise.
other than your martinique trip, do you use your french? do you practice it at all?
i use spanish every single day of my life. in business and with family. i never thought when i took it in school that it would ever come in handy.
my mother speaks italian and understands quite a bit of spanish because of the similarities.

Of course you use it every day, because you have that opportunity. You married someone who speaks Spanish and you have Spanish-speaking family members.
I don't encounter a lot of Spanish-speaking people down here (I hear they're mostly farther north in this state). Spanish is a practical language, especially now, but chances are they know how to speak English as well (if they don't I suggest they learn at least enough to get by) so I'm not going to worry about communication.

you are correct, southern niece, and mississippi is not the capital of latino population, although i hear it is growing down in south.
english is barely spoken correctly by our native population, let alone immigrants.
i only started to speak spanish daily when i moved back to los angeles and in my job i needed to use it for our company's pest control biz. that was in 1981 and i met elise in 1983.
