:Dtdallasw Would you please be my friend? I can't believe your dad was the chef at Blair House. I am so impressed. I bet he had some wonderful dishes and recipes. Have you ever thought of compiling a collection or cookbook along with a memory book for his grandchildren, nieces, nephews? 1*-) 1*-)

What a great thing, TD. I know your father was proud to be there in such a famous location with all its rich history. My question to you is can you cook? That's what I want to know! ;D ;D

My mother made some chocolate bread pudding for the first and only time (that I can remember) a couple of years back. That sure was some good stuff.
My mother made powered biscuits when I was younger, and I'd have to beg her to make them if I wanted any. She hasn't made any in a long time.
That was my childhood memory. ;D

;DOkay, since we're talking about food. I miss "Dinner on the Grounds" at church. Now it's "covered dish dinner" in the fellowship hall. But, when I was little girl, homecoming dinner at church was spread out on plywood boards on top of sawhorses. It seemed like the table stretched for miles. And.....there was a lady in charge of the lemonade. She made it in a huge tin washtub and it had lemon slices floating in it. It was ice cold and you dipped the lemonade with a tin dipper into the tub and filled a paper dixie cup. Mmmmm good.

Well Aba, yes, I am a very good cook. Though I don't do the baking my dad did. I'm not much into breads, rolls, pies, or cakes. I'm a carnivore! Meat dishes and vegetables are my thing.
Jonel, I've got newspaper and magazine clippings from the 50's and 60's with some of my Dad's interviews and recipes. He was the first Black head chef at the U.S. Senate Restaurant in the Capitol in the late 40's, and served as the personal chef for Secretary of the Navy, Admiral Forrestal when he was in the Navy during the Korean War. I'm very proud of his accomplishments. I love to cook - but not like he did. Wouldn't want to do it for a living.

I think this is so interesting TD! and it would make very interesting reading...to know the various things that were his specialties. I know that the Temptations have a weakness for Sweet Potato Pie. Did your Dad make that?

He did - but that was a little too 'down home' for his taste. He preferred to make pastries, cream puffs, Charlotte Russe, Chocolate Mousse, French Lace cookies, sugar cookies, rice pudding, bread pudding with ginger sauce or rum sauce, etc. My mom likes to do more 'Southern Soul Food' cooking than my dad ever did.

My ma looks around the internet for recipes--comparing them to hers, I suppose--and you know, she says that some of these people are crazy with how much of this and that they put in their desserts and things. Ma says, "trial and error."

Here are couple of his ice sculptures... First a vase and then, a mermaid. He did it the 'old fashioned' way - with an ice pick & chisel. Nowadays they use power tools. ;D WIMPS!!
