I'll try to answer you Aba...
My hubby uses a jack to plug his portable cd/mp3 player into our audio system, since our regular CD player doesn't play mp3 format. With the portable, you have no speakers, so you either have to listen thru headphones or plug it into a speaker system.
YES, the car kit is exactly as you described.
As far as recording, I believe you still need your computer and CD burner to do that. The cd/mp3 player is just that, a player, not a recorder.

Aba...just read your second note. I don't know anything about stand-alone CD burner/recorders, all I'm familiar with are the ones attached inside your computer, where you can record your own CD's either from other CD's or from files on your computer.

:oKalisa, I am in awe of your audio-electronic knowledge! I just know what sounds good, and you are right that MP3s have great sound. Ivory sent me an MP3 once in an email.....it was GREAT!

Jonel...I really don't know much. My other half is the real audio-phile, if he says he can't hear the difference, then I figure it has to be pretty good quality recording format .

Yeah, Kalisa is smart! She has more then enough MP3 knowledge to make up for my lack there of! All I know about MP3's is that it's music you download off the internet. That's just about it.

Ok my recorder is plugged into my system at home and I bought it so I could record my vinyl. I'm sure that burning those same lps from the internet would give you a better sound than recording off vinyl but I allready had all that music and I love to record as well as add my melodic voice to the cds a narrater on some and really it's my signature of the work I put in. Most of my vinyl is in great condition so I have fun recording it and that's why I have not gotten into mp3s at the time. It is certainly a space saver and money saver when you can put so much music on one disc. I have a cd burner on one of my computers and have never used it. The cd recorder works just like a double cassette deck in that I can make a cd from a cd and have it finish without any blank space at the end like you might at the end of a cassette. The machine does that automatically. Or i can do it manually recording from external cassette, cd and turnatable units at the same time as long as they all run through my mixing board. My set-up is 2 turntables, 2 double cassettes, 2cd players and a cd recorder/player and 2 microphones, an 8track and a reel-to-reel.

Aba...WOW, what a setup!! I understand the Phillips CD burners do a much better job at recording from vinyl, so I'm sure your CDs are great quality!
NOW, you take your CD's and "record" them on your computer. There is no loss of quality in duping audio files, such as there is with duping and re-duping VHS tapes. Most computers these days come with MusicMatch pre-installed, which is what I use. There will also be some program, depending on the brand burner you have, that you can use to record your music onto your computer.
mp3 files are basically data files as opposed to ...ummm..."audio" files (not to be confused with audiophiles ;D). Mp3 files are smaller files, which is why the CD will hold more of them than it will hold audio files. When you burn them back on to a cd, you have to find where to select the "record data" option in your recording program.
As far as going to the track you want on a cd/mp3 player, well LOL I haven't figured a way to do that...its pretty much been just hitting the "next" button until I find what I want to hear. I use mine mostly when I travel, so I don't have to carry a bunch of CD's with me.

Kalisa, seriously, this has to be the shortest "I'm leaving and I'm never coming back" fit in the history of the internet! Anyway, my mp3 player has the ability to display and read the file names of the songs. For my CDs that have ALL the Tempts albums, they are organized by album and since I usually know the name of the album the song if from, I just "scroll" to the album and then down to the song. For my "Tempts favorites" CD the songs are in alphabetical order, but I usually have it on "random" I don't do a lot of searching for a particular song. I think have I have like 70 or so songs of my "favorites" CD.

Yep, but Mike, since your taste in Tempts music isn't as, um, broad as mine, you wouldn't have 70 songs on your disc. There'd just be like 10 or so.

Well,I don't think that anybody who dresses like Otis is a Temptation, that does not mean I can't fill the MP3 with Temptations music, not IMITATION music ! The music that will be boomin' from the Pathfinder will be HALL OF FAME caliber. I'm not fooled by CHEAP IMITATION ! ;D

By the way. i don't have anything to compare with but I will tell you I am happy with the Phillips Cd recorder. Now all of you youngsters who don't know what an lp sounds like when somebody ate popcorn on it would not understand that recording fron vinyl is going to give you some of that. I personally don't mind it cause I've been hearing that noise all my life. However if the lp is clean you are going to get a great sound that you won't be disappointed in. I'm sure that the "perfect sound" you get while downloading songs is what it is all about but there are some things you can't get on the computer unless you add them yourself like Kalisa2 says. So If i am going to record all that stuff on cd, then I'm probably not going to dump the files on my computer because one, I don't listen to music through that medium and two i all ready have it on cd. But at least now I know how its done and this is one old dog that doesn't mind new tricks.

Aba...You have a wonderful collection, and I've heard great things about how the Phillips deals with vinyl. I'm used to the good old vinyl pops and needle noise myself. I had to hook up my turntable to my computer to transfer the Ruffin Brother's LP (My Brother's Keeper)(not available on CD)...the quality wasn't bad but not great. I have a program that will remove some of the sounds from imperfect vinyl recordings. I'm personally not organized enough nor have foresight enough to load one of those multi-changers in an auto. My few experiences with them have also taught me that no matter what I load...halfway down the road I'm going to want to hear something I DIDN'T load LOL! But that's me. The other advantage to ME, is for travel. I'd rather save my luggage space for clothes and goodies I buy when I'm on a trip. So I can carry my portable mp3/CD player and 2 CDs and have just about everything I could possibly want to listen to during travel "down times", long plane rides, waits etc. Its something to think about for future reference is all. If you're happy with the way you have things, there is no reason to go to all the work for no real gain to you . But now you know what you CAN do if the need/desire ever arises.
