Old Eddie definitely was the GO-TO man for ballads...I have a way of liking the guys for different genres - I love Ruffin doing songs like I'M LOSING YOU, AIN'T NO SUN, HE WHO PICKS THE ROSE and I'VE PASSED THIS WAY B4, but I don't like many Ruffin ballads....and vice versa I like Eddie doing the ballads but not when he did stuff like WAY OVER THERE, YOU NEED LOVE LIKE I DO DON'T YOU , KEEP ON TRUCKIN and BOOGIE DOWN...but there is nuthin like an Eddie Kendrick ballad!

Honestly, I think some of his solo material is every bit as good...if not better...than his leads with the Temptations.
Give a listen to "Darling Come Back Home," "Tell Her Love Has Felt The Need," "Date With The Rain," "If You Let Me," "Can I," "Girl, You Need A Change Of Mind," and the coolest gospel/disco track ever recorded, "Goin' Up In Smoke."
EJK was one talented dude.

sgtsoul,
I agree, the "Keep on Truckin'," "Boogie Down" are not my favorites. They seem so ASSEMBLY LINE. But, oh, "Tell Her Love Has Felt the Need," "Lullaby of Love," and one whose name has escaped me at the moment but it's on the TEMPTATIONS LIVE AT THE ROOSTERTAIL (where the Tempts go "fall, fall, fall") and so many other ballads are just unbelievable.
I think "Tell Her Love Has Felt the Need" needs a better title. It's awkward.
I think for many reason Eddie was best with the Temptations. It has more to do with his temperament than with a song. I won't go into all the psychological reasons.
Why didn't he stay? Ah, why did the Beatles split after ten years? I don't think there is any group who stayed intact and harmonious for more than ten years.
But it's all an individual decision. I am just glad we had them together as long as we did, and glad The Temptations are still with us.

Boogie Down and Keep On Trucking were dance songs, view in that context it works for me.

i like fading away also ;D When I first bought the Tempts anthology, way back in time, there were two songs I missed, and it took me some time, actually when I bought the albums, to remember what they were. One was "You'll Lose A Precious Love", a song David did BEFORE "My Girl". The other was "Fading Away", a song I knew instantly, when I heard it for the first time in a long time.
