"Curet 30-Help me out on this one. The original ' Crying In The Chapel ' was done by the Orioles "I'm not curet, but I can answer this one... ;D "Crying In The Chapel" was written by Artie Glenn in 1953. His son, Darrell, was the first to record the song (as a country tune) the same year. Within weeks of his original, other artists were already covering the song, among them: June Valli (pop), Rex Allen (country), the Orioles (R&B), Ella Fitzgerald (jazz) and Art Lund (swing). All of them broke into the Billboard Top 100 (all but Lund's charting Top 20) in 1953, with June Valli's reaching #4 on the Pop Chart. For the Orioles, the song went to #11 on the Pop Chart and #1 R&B...their biggest career hit. In 1965, Elvis Presley's cover went to #3 on the Pop Chart...the most successful of them all. Sonny Til's (Orioles) and Elvis' leads are the two most memorable vocal renditions of the song, IMO. Worth a listen... Sonny Til singing "My Prayer" (1951). The Platters would go on to make it one of their biggest hits five years later. Edit: Forgot to say...thanks, sgtsoul. Otis sounded excellent on this one...really did it justice.
