Richard Street's Temptations - They Are Stilll Fresh Cassie Pense - Vail Daily
It was easy for Richard Street, lead singer of the Temptations, to usher in new blood to keep the singing and dancing group's legacy alive.
"These guys grew up imitating the Temptations," Street said of the other members now performing the Temptations' repertoire. "They taught me stuff I had forgotten, songs I didn't even remember. I showed them some routines. It was easy to show them."
Street has been entertaining for over 47 years. Singing and dancing is what he does. Street and His Temptations will be performing all the classics, like "My Girl," "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone," "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" and "Just My Imagination," July 3rd at 7:30 p.m. at the Ford Amphitheater with The Sounds of the Supremes, a Supremes tribute band endorsed by Motown.
Street said there are a lot of people who can sing and dance. His successful shot at stardom was simply an issue of proximity. "I was in the right place at the right time," Street said. "I was right there in the city, where I could walk 20 blocks to Motown every day."
When he was recording these songs 30 years ago, Street knew the music would last a lifetime. The singers were all very special, and to Street the musicians were geniuses. "Good music never dies. It might go away for a while, but the circle comes back again," Street said.
Street has reached a point in his life where he feels truly blessed to have performed with the Temptations. It keeps him out of a rocking chair today, still clappin' spinnin' and laying down sweet tenor tracks.
"When you become a certain age you either grow up or remain an idiot. I have grown up enough that I value every little thing in life that I haven't valued before. Like being able to perform," Street said.
Street cherishes the opportunity to carry the name of his brothers who are no longer with him. Stepping beyond sustaining the music, Street is also writing a book about the legacy of the Temptations.
"It is a story that needs to be told," Street said. "It's coming from my heart and through my eyes. It is going to be truthful. I'm not going to ad lib or Hollywood it."
"Ball of Confusion" isn't the usual Hollywood story of drugs and women. Everyone knows that story, Street said. This tale has yet to be told, though Street wouldn't expand too much on the book's content.
"It is about the human sacrifice we all made to be in the Temptations," Street said. "Nothing could have been more exciting to me than being a Temptation. It took me around the world 20 times."
Street hopes his show triggers memories for many of the audience members. "The Temptations' music is what people get married to, divorced to - it's life," Street said.

It's the book that has me salavating. He has a story to tell and I believe some of the things we get so fired up about over here will be addressed in his book. I have no problem with Richard perfoming with a group. I like him and he was a professional for more than 20 years. I don't see why he can't get his respect for that reason alone. He sang some great leads while he was in the group and Norman Whitfield used him very well in the message songs...........

I hope we actually see it. I'm sure he's got some valuable insights. He was around through a great many things and I'd love to get his "take" on all of it.

Richard is just as much a Temptation as anyone in Otis' group besides Otis. What's wrong with him touring and making a living. As long as he can still sing and perform why not? His book will be good since he was there from the early years behind the scenes and then up front.

As long as you read it with the thought in mind its just one person's view of the group then you will be fine. He was a good Temptation and I liked him a lot.

Streets vocals on "Heavenly" .........unmatched I like Heavenly too but my favorite Richard cut is Hey Girl. When he sings the part "What you feel is for real and believe me its okaaaaaay" I'm really feelin' him.
