A Temptation too great
Thursday, January 29, 2004
By Clayton Hardiman CHRONICLE STAFF WRITER
In the steady stream of people flowing through the doors, there was a white-haired woman leaning on a walker. Later came a woman with a cane. And a woman with an oxygen tank. Mixed in the flow were teens, adolescents and young adults from generations X to Z.
"I think it's cool," said the 20-year-old, mohawk-wearing Samuel Kochman. "It's inspiring."
A musician himself, he was relatively new to the ranks of Temptations admirers, having received a Temptation CD from his mother for Christmas. Now he understood the fuss.
"Now I want to go home and try some things with harmonies," he said. "People don't do that much with harmonies any more."
Tommy Scott was one who didn't make it to the Temptations concert. Illness kept him at home. But his wife, Muskegon Heights councilwoman Dorothy Scott, was there, letting the music transport her through time.
"It took me back to when my husband was in Vietnam," she said. "I used to mail all the tapes to him."
Apparently it took the Temps back as well. Sole founding member Otis Williams reminisced about playing Muskegon for three weeks in 1964. When the group returned to Detroit, they learned from Motown Records founder Berry Gordy that they had scored their first hit.
"We were up here when 'The Way You Do The Things You Do' jumped off," Williams said.
Four Grammys, countless personnel changes and 43 years later, the Temptations are still doing things with harmonies that no one else does. They still sing the songs that everybody recognizes. They still have the flawless choreography.
And, as they demonstrated with Wednesday night's concert, they still draw crowds that look like America.

O great, now we're up to four Grammy's. Like I said, if I ever read an article that has ALL the facts straight I'll I know it's hard and things can get confusing, but still. For the record, they've only won 3 Grammy's.

Yes Mike, but by your own admission, the one they won for "Ear-Resistable" shouldn't count. ........ Seriously, it was that second "Papa" Grammy that was throwing me, I thought that it ONLY went to Paul Riser since, last time I saw them, the Tempts didn't play any instruments. Besides, they only showed two Grammy statues in the movie!

Like I said,Papa was a Rolling Stone was a multiple grammy winner.

Everybody I played it for liked it. It got alot of airplay in philadelphia. I heard it a few times in new york. So, honestly, why didn't it deserve a grammy? Who had a better all around album? I heard the other albums out that year.

Just because you played it is not the same as airplay....it didn't get as much airplay as Stay, which should have won a grammy. Pheonix Rising as a whole got more airplay. It was a gift!

so my question is is, why didn't it deserve a grammy? If the songs were played on the radio why didn't it deserve one? If was a good album and some of the songs got airplay. I remember hearing "selfish reasons" when I was in SC. So, why didn't it deserve a grammy? I really want to know your true opinion. no jokes, just your opinion on why it wasn't deserving.

I said it before....it didn't get airplay here, the majority of music lovers didn't even know it was out Your girl admitted that it was a make-up for P.R. not winning. P.R. was played everywhere Stay and How Could He Hurt You.. Lady was the least heard song to "win" a Grammy.

But here's the deal, did Johnny Taylor, George Duke, Jeffery Osbourne, or Will Downing sell more albums that year?
