Probe Into The $40,000 Missing From Late Singer David Ruffin Continues
Police in Philadelphia are still trying to find out exactly what happened to the $40,000 former Temptations lead singer David Ruffin had on him before he died of a drug overdose. (Jet, June 17 )
Ruffin, 50, whose death was ruled “accidental,” died from an “adverse reaction to drugs (cocaine) the medical examiner’s office told Jet. However, not much progress has been made in locating the $40,000 that Ruffin was reportedly carrying in a money belt at the time of his death.
“It’s an ongoing investigation and we haven’t broken the case yet,” Lt. Michael Oswald told Jet, adding, “We don’t know where the money is.” Police speculate that Ruffin was robbed after passing out in a crack house in West Philadelphia.
Donald Brown, a limousine driver, dropped Ruffin off at the emergency room of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania around 3 a.m. on June 1. Ruffin, who at 6 feet 2 weighed only 125 pounds, died about an hour later. Police tracked down Brown, who left the hospital without giving his name, to question him in the case, and later released him without filing charges.
In the meantime, services were scheduled to be held for Ruffin at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit at Jet press time. The singer, who earned the legendary Motown group their first No. 1 single My Girl is survived by a son David II; three daughters, Nedra Ruffin, Kimberly Little, and Cheryl Bromery; and six grandchildren.
Superstar Michael Jackson announced he would pick up all the expenses for the funeral. Bob Jones, vice president of MJJ Enterprises, told Jet when Jackson found out ther was a drive to raise funds for Ruffin’s funeral expenses, “He immediately said he would take care of everything.”
Jackson, who praised Ruffin as “one of the great rock ‘n’ roll voices of the 60’s and 70’s who will certainly be missed forever,” was not scheduled to attend the service. Jones said, “Michael’s in the studio winding up an album Dangerous. He will not be attending the service, because it would turn into a circus.”
Ruffin had recently returned from a four week tour of Europe with Eddie Kendricks, another original member of the Temptations, and Dennis Edwards, who replaced Ruffin in the group but ended up severing ties with the quintet in 1984. The tour is scheduled to continue, road manager Tunis Wilson told Jet, and David Sea, a backup singer, will sing all the Ruffin songs.
Following the funeral, the singers will perform in Paris, Italy, and London by popular demand, and the tour will be dedicated to Ruffin’s memory, Wilson said.
