That makes two of us. I have the album. I don't need to hear a version where they simply turned down the instrumental backing and all you hear is the vocal and a little of the "bleed" from the headphones of Ali-Ollie and Theo. Ed LOL, well I don't hear any bleed (not like on the vocal track of "My Girl" that we have, at least), but I do love the vocal tracks or a capellas on everything I have. I do have this one, thanks to the generosity of a kind friend (MWWAAAHHH!! you know who you are, girlfriend! !)

...and I have to tell you, Ed... I do think of you and ProTools when I listen to it. There are parts where I don't hear Ali taking a breath when I'd expect it, and I think "HA! Ed could tell us if that is cut/paste!"

Ed could tell us if that is cut/paste!" Oh yeah. ProTools is heavily at work on that whole record. The general rule is that when you don't hear breaths, the engineer had to remove them to make his edits less obvious. Sometimes, though, he or she will slip and forget to take them out. For proof, check out "For Your Love/You Send Me" where Ali-Ollie sings, "Now I find myself wanting...to marry you and take you home (unnaturally short breath) Whooooooaaaaaa". LOL! It's very odd to listen to but it isn't really the engineer's fault. Any "punch-in" or edit that you attempt in that spot will sound unnatural. What the producer should have done is have Ali-Ollie sing that whole line with the "Whoooaaa" again. "home" and "Whoaaa" shouldn't have been split up the way they were. That's just one example on that record. Ed P.S.: Hear through walls...LOL! Only if the pay is good enough...

Not good, just obsessive. It comes with the job...LOL! Thanks for the nice compliment though... Ed Does it take away from your enjoyment of a song when you are so analitical? How do you separate the two? It can. When I first heard B5's rendition of "All I Do Is Think Of You", it was under less-than-perfect audio conditions and, because of that, I liked it...at first. Later that evening, I heard it on Rhapsody and my opinion of it changed drastically. The edits were so obvious and the gadgetry used to make Patrick sound like he was singing on-key was so pronounced, I could no longer enjoy the song. Ever time I heard it after that night, it just irritates me...LOL! Most often, though, the edits and the whatever pitch-correction might have been used is done well enough on most songs that I can still enjoy them. I also have trouble listening to songs with bad mixes. While we're kinda talking about Troop (the B5 cover of "All I Do..." sounds a lot like Troop's cover of it back in '89), the mix on their hit, "Spread My Wings" is just awful - especially when it comes to the doubling of the vocals. The vocal is very distorted at times and it's pushed too far forward in the mix. Unfortunately, that song is no longer particularly enjoyable for me. In short, I love my ears and feel blessed to have a good pair but, at times, they can keep me from being able to enjoy some songs. As far as being able to separate the two, that's not something I'm capable of. If it's technically bad, I can't enjoy it and I can't relate to people when they say they can...LOL!! Ed

Ed Well I ask because I wanted to hear an honest answer and I got one. In a sense I guess I'm glad I don't have that good an ear!!! ;D ;D I'm sure it is necessary but for me it seems half of my vast collection would be useless if I did. So I just go on how it makes me feel and if for some reason it sounds good enough for me to want to know how they did it, then I will go the next step. For example, I like Spread My Wings and FOr YOur Love/ You Send Me, two songs you have broken down in such a way that I'm not so sure I would want to know they were done so poorly. I happen to like I guess for you it can be a blessing and a curse at times............ ;D

LOL! I'm glad my critique of those songs had no effect on you. I hope it had no effect on anyone else either. I would have sited a few more examples in my last post were I not afraid of ruining songs for people... Ed

I was jsut wondering what it takes for a song to make you like it, if you llisten with such a critical ear. ;D

I fall for a song the same way everyone else does. The trouble, sometimes, is staying in love with a song. If there are aspects of it that are just awful (the production, the editing, the mix), it becomes harder to listen to the song and I fall out of love with it. If all of the elements work (and, most often, they do), I can stay in love. In fact, if I buy an album and the whole thing has a great mix (example: Steely Dan "Two Against Nature" or Quincy Jones "The Dude"), I can fall in love with it sonically then fall in love with the individual songs later. Strange, huh?
