Hi Temptsinfo Family,
Just wanted to share a few hilights of Earl Lewis & The Channels for 2005.
March 2005 - One of the most memorable moments for the Channels, the TJ Lubinsky produced PBS DooWop Cavalcade special taped at the Sands Hotel in Atlantic City. Here are a few notes from that event
■ March 2005 - The Channels meet for the first time; Pete Moore of the Miracles, Mr. Levi Stubbs, The Andantes; Pat Lewis and the lovely Louvain Demps. The Four Tops lineup of Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Theo Peoples, Ronnie McNair and the late Renaldo “Obie” Benson. It would be one of Renaldo’s last live television performance and we count it an honor to have seen him perform live.
■March 2005 - Many from NYC drove to Atlantic City. However, Joe Rivera tried to see if any flew in. He asked “how was your flight coming in fellas?” “What flight?” they asked. “We drove” was the response. If they did fly in, they kept it to themselves really well. I guess they had too many years on Joe for him to pull a fast one on them.
■March 2005 - Quote of the Day, perhaps of the Year... The morning after the taping, The Channels and the Harptones were having breakfast together. Earl & Willie were reminiscing about the early years. Willie said something like “Those were good old days, we had fun. And you know I still have fun today. I don’t go out there like it’s a competition or anything like that”. A Harptone chimed in a said “I don’t know about that - when I hit the stage, THE BATTLE IS ON!”
■April 2005 - Flying back to NY from West Palm Beach, Florida, Earl is sitting next to a passenger who talked his ear off from takeoff to touchdown. It wasn’t bad enough Earl was seeking a much needed nap but the conversation was about plane designs and possible design FLAWS that causes air mishaps!
■May 2005 - The month marked 10 years of service as a Channel for Joe Rivera. Joe recalls his FIRST performance as having rehearsed ONE time on a Wednesday evening and performing 3 days later on a Saturday. He put on a cool demeanor when the Channels performed The Videos’ ‘Trick, Trickle’... a song that was NOT rehearsed. Joe asked the other guys “Is this how Earl operates?” and he was told “welcome to the Channels Joe”.
■October 2005 - The Channels were sharing a dressing room with another group. There was a heated conversation about... goats. Yes, goats. One member from the other group was insisting that goats from down south have no need to drink water. The other group member was saying “man, you don’t know what you’re talking about - everything needs water” but the other group member stood his ground saying “man I’m from down south, I know what I’m talking about” This kept going on back and forth until they just quit and left the dressing room. Their guitarist turned to me and said “he’ll probably come back and say cats only walk backwards in the south too!”
■November 2005 - A drummer from another group summed it best (paraphrasing) “The best stuff happens backstage more so than on stage. We make friendship back here, with one another, that lasts a lifetime”
With that said, we, Earl Lewis & The Channels would like to thank TOMMY LOCKHART of the SHEPS for taking time out of his busy schedule to fill in for a Channel who was unable to make a show.
We would also like to thank EVERYONE who sent in their prayers to POOKIE HUDSON. We firmly believe PRAYER works and POOKIE has to be named “COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE
YEAR!”
Last but surely not least, ALL THE FANS who took time out of their busy schedules to came to see Earl Lewis & The Channels perform live and a SPECIAL THANKS to those who granted Joe Rivera permission to use their photos on his website.
Have a safe Holiday Season to all
